Worst case would be re-signing Correa, Graveman, and Verlander as they are the Astros own free agents.
What on earth are you talking about? Correa wasn't getting traded under any circumstances midseason this year.
Their production doesn’t matter because they were Astros the same as Brantley and Gurriel this past year.
John McClain needs to come out and report that there is no way the Astros are resigning Correa…so that way the Astros will resign Correa like 10 minutes later
It was funny how he waited until after the trade deadline to announce he will test free agency and pretty much said his time was going to be over in Houston. I'm sure he felt if he said that at the beginning of the season that there was always a chance he could be traded. So, that's what I'm talking about.
The Astros, in the middle of a pennant race, and trying to win another title, were never going to trade away one of their best players at the trade deadline. Never.
If Brantley and Gurriel's production didn't matter per some posters last season because they were Astros the year before (i.e., they shouldn't be used to evaluate Click), Correa, Verlander, and Graveman's production shouldn't matter if they are re-signed.
Again, what are you talking about? He announced that his deadline for an extension was the end of Spring Training, and after that, he would stop dealing with his contract until free agency. We knew in April he was going to be a free agent. And again, he was NEVER going to be traded during the season. He was one of the best players in baseball on a World-Series-hopeful team.
No one said they were GOING to trade him. I said Correa waited until AFTER the trade deadline to announce and reiterate just in case it appeared that he could. Funny on the timing of it.
But it wasn't because everyone knew it once he didn't have a new contract out of Spring Training. There was no surprise there.
Man I hope the Astros don't target someone like Pillar when they at least have McCormick available and should have Meyers back at some point. Chas should hit about as well as Pillar and is a substantially better fielder. There's a very good chance at least one of Chas/Jake turn into an above average player. The only real hole the Astros have is at SS and even then Pena should at least be above replacement level for cheap. Outside of the pen, the only way to really upgrade the roster other than mitigating some of the risk/adding depth is to sign some elite talent.
With the amount of money Houston has freed up, it’s almost a guarantee that they will sign at least one significant ($15M+ AAV) free agent. There are only 23 guys left who project to get a contract that big: Correa 33, probably too expensive Scherzer 33, probably not interested in Houston Seager 29, probably too expensive Semien 27 Freeman 26, not a good fit Bryant 25 Story 24 Kershaw 24, probably not interested in Houston Ray 23 Marte 21 Stroman 21 Syndergaard 21, signed with Angels Verlander 20 Baez 20 Gausman 19 Castellanos 19, not a good fit Rodon 17 Conforto 17, not a good fit Belt 17, not a good fit E-Rod 16, signed with Tigers Taylor 15 Schwarber 15, not a good fit Gray 15 R Iglesias 15 Rizzo 15, not a good fit
I can't find where it was discussed or where the article from August is but he made it seem like he was leaving Houston after the season. Before that it was still a matter of a possibility of resigning him but his statements after the All-Star break was more of a door almost shutting. Regardless, the point of that post wasn't to talk about Corra and that time but to focus on after he makes his final decision. TBH I could care less when he actually made up his decision for good or what was written about it as much as what happens going forward. Original post minus the all-star break part below
My dream outcome would be Bryant (rf) Tucker (cf) Brantley(lf) Stroman Re-sign Graveman, Yemi Let Pena and/or Diaz play short. Of course trading for Bieber instead of signing Stroman would be great if it didn’t cost Pena.
