I completely understand the patriots south backlash and it’s warranted in every aspect. But his stint in Denver was about 12 years ago.

And if people would take off their “Texan Hate Glasses” they would see that McDaniels checks all the boxes!

    Young offensive mind - check
    Adaptive offensively - check
    Winner - check
One of the best coordinators in football - check
    Super bowl rings - check

I can promise you if he coached anywhere but New England everybody would be screaming to hire McDaniels.

He will not leave Boston for Houston. The cupboard is bare .. and the likelihood of failure is assured. McDaniels has to succeed wherever he goes or he doesn't get another HC chance. The Texans are 4 to 5 years from being rebuilt. He wants no part of this organization.

Same. It was a Bill O'Brien type atmosphere (obviously BOB took it up a notch). He was hated in the city and very unpopular in the organization. Hard pass.

I also want nothing to do with New England.

This team also has zero talent and is miles away from even being competitive. I wouldn't even bother looking at head coaches for another 3 years

Ah yes let's grab more people from the patriots as our latest attempt to become patriots of the south.
There's a reason y we didn't grab Carr little bro, to avoid Carr part 2. Our dumbass franchise still wants to b a patriots wannabe and have yet to learn that lesson.

Got rid of him just in time.

He can steal money from the Packers now.

I want a competent HC whether it's on the offensive or defensive side of the ball. McDaniels has the skins on the wall with what he's done in the past and his outstanding work with Mac Jones.

I'm really interested in seeing what McDaniels can do with Mills. I'm not anti Pats hiring.

Right now that is just my belief is that McDaniels will be our next HC…that doesn’t mean it will happen…but if it does don’t say I didn’t warn you and the rest of the fan base.

I'm calling it now and telling everybody to prepare themselves because it’s a real possibility and don’t want people blowing a fuse if/when it does.

Rudy, those traits make him a great coordinator, but you could say the same thing when he was given the DEN HC job. Leadership was his shortfall before and that is my concern when he's given his next HC gig.

I believe he has grown from that experience.

He was really young when he got that gig and while we see more now with younger head coaches getting HC gigs that become successful right away with some examples being McVay lafluer and kingsbury to some extent. That wasn’t the case with McDaniels.

But he went back to New England and has really grown as person and coach…pulled a belichick with Indy and is prime for a HC gig.

And I really see no better team with the resources (picks/money) and connections (Caserio/Easterby) then the Texans.

He has also done a great job in developing Mac Jones. Dude is an impressive rookies and McDaniels has played a big part.

What I know: The Texans’ 2019 draft class has been a disaster

    Texans' 2019 draft class
    Round | Player | Position | Outcome
1 | Tytus Howard | OL | Struggling after move from RT to LG
2 | Lonnie Johnson Jr. | DB | Has changed positions twice
2 | Max Scharping | OL | Benched in each of past two seasons
3 | Kahale Warring | TE | Played 7 games before being waived
    5 | Charles Omenihu | DL | Traded at 2021 deadline
6 | Xavier Crawford | CB | Waived as rookie
7 | Cullen Gillaspia | FB | Waived after two seasons

This was the second and final draft class put together by former GM Brian Gaine, who deserves blame, especially for the Kahale Warring pick. But the Texans’ plan for developing these players after his firing has been suspect, too.

The Texans recently moved Lonnie Johnson to cornerback, the position at which he was drafted, because playing safety in Lovie Smith’s Cover 2-heavy scheme just “didn’t fit what he was athletically,” according to Culley. And it doesn’t sound like the coaching staff anticipates Johnson contributing at corner this season. He hasn’t played a snap on defense in the past two games.

When a player has had three general managers, three defensive coordinators and two head coaches in three years, it’s impossible to make a fair judgment of his production. But if a second-round pick can’t cement himself anywhere by his third season, it’s probably somewhat indicative of his ceiling at any position, too.

Tytus Howard at least profiled as an average starting right tackle during his two seasons there, but he’s underwhelmed at left guard this season. The Texans said moving him there allowed them to play their best five offensive linemen, including longtime Patriot Marcus Cannon at right tackle. Cannon was solid before landing on IR after four games, but he’s also 33 years old. Was it worth moving Howard to accommodate Cannon, who sat out last season and will not be part of the team’s long-term future?

Howard will likely still be back for next season, but that might not be the case with Max Scharping, who has rotated in and out at right guard since last year and played just 10 total snaps on offense in the past two games. Scharping hasn’t moved positions like Howard; he’s just failed to live up to the billing of a second-round pick.

The Texans seemed to make one good value selection in the fifth round of the 2019 draft, when they selected Charles Omenihu. He tied J.J. Watt for the team lead in QB hits last season and was even leading the team in pressure rate through Week 4, only to then become a healthy scratch for two games. The Texans traded him to the 49ers at the deadline for a sixth-round pick, after deciding he didn’t fit into their long-term plans.

There were many mistakes made along the way that brought the Texans to where they are now, but some of the more significant cracks began here. Unless Howard turns things around, no one from this draft class might receive a second contract from the Texans.

What I believe: Tytus Howard won’t get his fifth-year option picked up this offseason

The Texans must decide this offseason whether to pick up Howard’s fifth-year option, which covers him in 2023. According to Over The Cap, the fully guaranteed option is projected to be worth $12.7 million. By average annual value, that would pay Howard like a top-seven guard.

Perhaps the Texans decline the option and then sign Howard to an extension at a lower price, though that is rare.

The cost would be more justifiable if Howard was playing tackle, but if the Texans move him back there after one year at guard, well, read above.

    […]

What I know: The Texans probably won’t get the No. 1 pick

According to Football Outsiders, the Texans entered Week 12 with just an 8.5 percent chance at finishing with the NFL’s worst record. If they beat the Jets on Sunday, it’ll all but guarantee the Texans don’t land the top pick. As is, it’s hard to imagine this currently winless Lions team winning two of its final six games.

What I believe: Texans fans shouldn’t stress over that this year

If ever there was a year for the Texans to steal a win against the eight-win Titans and hurt their chances at the No. 1 overall pick, it’s this year. The 2022 NFL Draft is widely considered to be light on quarterbacks. If there’s no Trevor Lawrence-type available at the top of the draft, it’s not as big of a deal for the Texans to miss out on the top pick. They could still select a quarterback — maybe even the first quarterback off the board — with what will still be a high pick, or they could address one of their many other needs. And in the meantime, maybe Culley can build some positive momentum by winning a few more games.
