I will be very surprised if Marte doesn’t get at least 4 years. I would be totally ok with Houston giving him $70M/4yrs and wouldn’t be all that concerned if he got $90M/5yrs.

Isn’t he 33 or 34 years old? I would not be comfortable with a 4 year deal since his playing strengths are due to his speed and athleticism.

I guess Miami really low-balled Marte with their 3 YR- $30M offer at the deadline. But, 4 YRS- $70M? Maybe so. Astros would have strongly consider that with what he would add to the team.

He’s coming off the best year of his career at age 32 (he just turned 33). He takes extremely good care of his body. Yes speed is a significant part of his profile but as he ages he is still likely to have value. Another aspect that I think is underrated is that Marte has never been on a good team for a full season. Putting him in an extremely good/deep lineup like Houston’s might allow him to get to another level or at least partially offset some of the aging curve. At $70M you’d want him to put up 10 war for it to represent an excellent value, and he’d have to put up <6 wins for it to be a bad value; that’s 1.5 wins/year over a 4 year contract, a very reasonable risk considering he is coming off a 5.4 win season.

Meyers being hurt sucks and I'm concerned with his arm strength considering it wasn't very good before the shoulder surgery. Marte is the best CFer available by far. Kris Bryant is going to cost way more and putting him in CF in the AL West with some pretty big outfields to cover seems like a bad idea. If Correa is gone, you need to boost the offense somewhere especially if Pena is the SS. Marte can move to LF if Brantley doesn't resign after next season.

The other option could be Tucker in CF. Not sure I want to go that way, but it does open up a corner outfield spot. However, Conforto and Castellanos both received qualifying offers. Mark Canha could be an option but not that exciting and also 33 years old. Chris Taylor could have made sense for CF but the Dodgers gave him a qualifying offer. Astros probably want to keep those picks.

If Pena is the SS and McCormick or Siri is in CF I will not feel great about this team.

I disagree. They slumped too much. Need more consistency.

Marte is 82 out of his last 95 in Stolen Base Attempts. As was pointed out, he has never been on a good team. He very well may be able to take it to another level hitting in the Astros lineup.

No they really dont. Its been talked about a lot here. They scored a lot of runs in blowouts. Their run differential was great but that eas due to blowouts. Our bats went cold too much. Easy to just point to the numbers without looking deeper. Too many slumps and mental breakdowns. Not good close and late. Way too many runners stranded in tight games. What you saw against the braves happened a lot this year.

Prigioni was still one of the fastest point guards despite being one of the oldest players on the Rockets.

Not sure how feasible trade values are, but here's a fun pipe dream...

    Trea Turner 5 x 28

    Trades

    To Pirates:
    Jeremy Pena
    Jose Siri
    Christian Javier
    Tyler Ivey

    To Astros:
    Bryan Reynolds

    To Reds:
    Luis Garcia
    Colin Barber
    Joe Perez

    To Astros:
    Luis Castillo

That's about 50 million in added payroll... then sign Graveman for 10 million and you're about a few million less than last year...

    SS Turner
    CF Reynolds
    2B Altuve
    DH Alvarez
    3B Bregman
    RF Tucker
    1B Gurriel
    LF Brantley
    C Maldonado

    Rotation
    McCullers
    Castillo
    Valdez
    Urquidy
    Odorrizi

    Bullpen
    Pressley
    Graveman
    Stanek
    Maton
    Taylor
    Baez
    James/Whitley

Probably not wise to give up depth in rotation... Solomon and Bielak would be in AAA for depth...

    Hell of a lineup...

    Are the Dodgers cutting him?

Do you even realize that Trea Turner is not a free agent? Kinda throws a monkey wrench in your plan

My bad, could have sworn he was... must have been articles i had read where they were debating who Dodgers should keep between him and Seager...

Would keep pena then and replace with different prospect...

$80M/5yrs is a little lower than expected. Good signing for the Tigers. I do think Houston will end up with 1 of Verlander, Ray, Gausman, or Rodon.
