My wife informed me last night it was time for a new mattress so this thread popped into my head - thanks @jiggyfly !

I spent a couple of hours during commercials and after the Astros game reading Sleepopolis. What a fantastic site, by the way.

It turns out that I have no clue as to what I needed and my current mattress is too firm for me and my wife as side sleepers. After even more reading I’ve determined that my pillow sucks too…and there are even far better sheets, too.

    https://sleepopolis.com/best-mattress/best-mattress-for-side-sleepers/

Costco carries several of these brands. I’ll pull the trigger on a new mattress this week.

Has anyone here ever bought online, used their mattress for a couple of months then sent it back? Curious on how convoluted and difficult the companies make it.

    Yeah, that site is fabulous.

I think the pillow thing is a scam but I will do some reading and I did know about sheets being on there that should be an interesting read.

My mattress is on backorder, hopefully, it will be here next week.

Sent back a Casper and a Tempur-Pedic, bought both online directly. Casper easy peasy, called they set up a pick up from the Salvation Army and all they wanted was a copy of the receipt confirming the pick up.

Tempur-Pedic's customer service gave me a bit of the run around. The first time I called I don't remember the specifics of anymore. Something along the lines of I had to talk to a different department in their customer service and for some reason they weren't available. Called the same number back the a day or two later and the person that answered set up the return no issues.

I finally ordered a new mattress last night. I decided on the Helix Midnight Luxue. It’s on the higher price end of the mattresses I researched but I think it hits the sweet spot for me as a side sleeper who turns over all night long and my wife who is a combo sleeper who goes from back to side. I really like everything about it from zoned support to cooling features to firm edges to 15 year warranty. It’s even rated well for sex.

This mattress is 14” deep so we need new sheets so I went ahead and got some fancy cooling sheets from Casper as well as a very well rated side sleeper pillow.

I used https://sleepopolis.com/ for my research. It’s an awesome mattress/sleeping stuff site.

If you’re considering a new mattress now is the time with Black Friday / XMas deals everywhere.

Why would I want a new mattress? I’m just breaking mine in at going on 17 years old. I’ve never been more comfortable. Was I supposed to replace it 7 years ago because some jackass told me my mattress is past it’s lifeline?

I say my mattress is fine.

This does bring up the mattress paradox. If you travel though time, will the mattress bounce back?

It's a common misconception that side sleepers do better on softer mattresses.

The truth is it depends on how heavy you are and where you carry your weight.

A soft mattress will feel comfortable at first for a side sleeper, but over time shoulder problems will develop because the softer mattress will cause your upper body to sink in further, thus causing your arm(s) to end up folding across your body, which leads to impingement, discomfort, and general ortho problems.

What I've found is that a firm mattress encourages proper sleeping posture for side sleepers. It forces you to keep your arms more perpendicular to your body which actually relieves pressure on the vulnerable parts of the joint.

Where "firm" vs "soft" matters most is in the center third of the mattress. If you're a heavier person, or you got that badonkadonk, you will benefit immensely from a mattress that has extra center-third support.

Hows the mattress? I've been waking up with tons of neck pain and shoulder knots recently.

Amazing. Money well spent. Use a sleepopolis.com link if you buy, they put serious work into their reviews.

I also ended up buying a Nola Squishy Pillow. They’re based in Texas. Also used the sleepopolos link when I bought.

Your shoulder pain and knots may be related to your posture, desk ergonomics and workout form (if you work out).

Bought 2 Purple mattresses 8 years ago( 2 Twins XL to make a California King). These heavenly mattresses destroyed my back pains. I travel extensively for my real estate investing business, sleeping in hotels mattresses even the 5 star ones always making me wanting to reunite with my Purple again.
