Except he's done what the Texans asked him to do - there's no legal reason to withhold pay. The Texans are the ones inactivating him and not playing him in preseason games, etc. In the Ben Simmons situation, he was the one not showing up, not working out, etc.
Nope Texans are going get screwed over. Will be conditions on a bunch of these picks bc they are forcing it through now. I could even see the situation where they put a playing time condition on it (basically protecting Miami if he's suspended or whatever), but then that doesn't happen and Deshaun gets hurt → boom that first is now a second! K thanks bye! I wouldn't put it past the Texans to overlook that possibility. Nick Caserio is not being allowed to do his job, so I have lost all faith. There may be some initial uglyness, but Miami will look back at it like an absolute steal.
You could simply ask him to play. If he says yes, you could still not play him. If he says no, you could fine him. Texans are too scared to even do that. Deshaun's over here vetoing trades like a shitty fantasy commissioner and we're over here trying to cater to his demands. What a ****ing joke from the top down.
Miami doesn't own their own pick this year. They have San Francisco's. Any value of future first round picks would not be changed by trading him at a different time during the season. However, if you wait till the offseason, and now you know SF's pick is #20, then you ask for more future compensation.
Sure - they could and see what happens. But they haven't because the Texans don't actually want him to play (whether its the distraction or risk of injury or not knowing the playbook or whatever). That's the key difference between this and Ben Simmons.
That will happen next year if we haven’t found a suitable trade for him. Because that’s when his extension kicks in.
Yeah you aren't getting it. They don't have to be serious about wanting him to play to request that he do it. If he accepts, they can still decide **** you deshaun you're benched for future insurance salesman Davis Mills. Are they worried about upsetting him? I mean come the **** on.
You don't seem to be getting it. The Texans aren't doing that - the why doesn't matter. They aren't doing it, so they can't fine or punish him in any way. They clearly have their reasons for not doing it.
I am very aware that they aren't doing it, and they aren't going to do it, period. I never said otherwise. The bottom line is they could, and they should. Especially if he's over here vetoing his way to a trade he wants. I don't GAF if the Texans believe they have their reasons. Great, just like they had "reasons" for trading Hop, signing Eric Murray, setting up a trust fund for Whitney Merciless' great-great grandchildren, or making O'Brien GM.
The NFL has never had a history of conditional picks... so this is novel territory for all parties, and I'll believe it when I see it.
I said the same thing, but I THINK they are scared Goodell may put him on the CEL right away and screw up a trade.
If that was the case Miami wouldn't be trading for him. It's not like they wouldn't know that. And regardless if there are conditions and he is traded, and subsequently put on the CEL, then we likely wouldn't be getting the full value of the picks anyway. Are you suggesting Goodell wouldn't only put Deshaun on the CEL if the Texans activated him? He starting for Miami fresh off the plane...
They still get the pick... just goes from a 2nd to a 1st. People here more jaded towards picks with "protection" and fears that the Texans won't get "anything" should Watson get suspended. But in the end, if we're talking about 1st round picks that may be 2nd round picks... or multiple first round picks that may turn into maybe one less first and more 2nd's... they're still expected to receive a haul.
But we're not talking about pick protection or picks being abandoned altogether. That's a good example of the extent the NFL goes... a 2nd round pick becomes a first round pick. Teams more than happy with 2nd round picks for mediocre QB's who may become decent again if they stay healthy. I don't expect severe stipulations on any picks they may receive. Even sitting out a year, he's still in his prime and is an MVP candidate. If they don't get what they want, they shouldn't trade him now. If they're pushing for something... chances are they're getting a more than decent return.
I'm not suggesting the picks would be abandoned altogether, but it would be a serious issue if any firsts weren't actually firsts. If Nick Caserio or anyone else is even considering a trade with conditional picks that could go away altogether, then I don't know what we are even talking about anymore.
Would you rather have a 2nd round pick now... or a first round pick 3 years from now? I'm fine if some firsts become seconds if Deshaun really is suspended for more than a year (doubtful). This should be a haul that's somewhat unprecedented given where he is in his career. If Wentz's "conditions" were merely just that, I would expect these conditions (if there are any) to not be all that variable. Whoever gets Deshaun has him locked up for the next 5 years. That by itself is going to be worth a ton, even if he has to miss part of that time (and again, doubtful).
