Again, I don't do this. But if I was working 2 fulltime jobs, and they both managed to have an emergency at the same time that required my attention in the same short time window, obviously I have to let someone down and suffer the consequences. But, in my profession, the way you would do this sort of double-duty is to be an employee for the first job and an independent contractor or freelancer for the second. Contractors and freelancers aren't necessarily expected to be on-call in emergencies and in any case can only be held to the letter of the contract. Then it's just a matter of which job I value more and my expectation of consequences.

As to the ethics of it -- my employer would cut me in an instant if they thought it would improve shareholder value and care ****-all about what it does to me and my family. So I don't worry about the ethics. If they have me sign a legal document, we can think about the legal requirements, but ethics aren't even a consideration.

I think at the end of the day
Bobrek expects people to be FAR FAR more ethical than Corporations/businesses

Companies have people train their cheaper replacements.. . not overly ethical to me
Companies constantly doing things to undermine their employee's quality of life . . . they don't care
    but
We are all taught sooo soo much that we should care more for companies than we care for ourselves
Once we start self care it feels selfish, wrong and odd

People are beginning to break out of the shackle of company loyalty above all
People are being loyal to themselves and their families
They are show as much loyalty as companies show . . .

    People do "unethical" things everyday
    depends on your ethics.
THAT IS THE QUESTION! What are YOUR ETHICS?
Alot of ETHICS discussed here are from the company/business perspective. .. to their benefit
when it is the the person/employee's benefit it is seen as "unethical"

If I have 2 jobs and one will need me all day . .. I call in sick to job 2
Unethical to job 2 but ethical to my life

If i goto the job and they had an outage so they send me home without pay
Unethical to me cause i was ready to work and now I don't get paid .. . . but ethical to the company saving that pay

Ethics are a matter of perspective

What I can control is my ethical behavior. If I felt the company I was working for was treating me unfairly, I had the opportunity to let them know and see if it gets fixed or stand my ground and quit rather than sacrificing my ethics and self respect.

most people give prioritize putting food on their table family and their own health and well being than their employer

and there are a ton more unethical things companies do than an individual having, maintaining, and producing for 2 jobs

When I worked for a startup, that Ferntits bought, they promoted my friend and had him move his family from Houston to Indiana.

They laid him off 3 weeks later.

If folks are comfortable doing it, why are they hesitant to let their respective employers know?

If you're comfortable with beating off, why would you be hesitant to let your grandmother know?

I do think it would be weird starting a new job and being fully remote for the reasons you stated. What I absolutely can't imagine though is starting a new job straight out of school fully remote. I don't know in that scenario if I'd make it a month.

Yep. After seeing how much my parents and in-laws meant to my kids and how much we try to mean to our grand kids, it's one of the biggest (if not the biggest) regrets in my life.

Probably for the same reason you don't tell someone you're on a date with how many other dates you're going on.

I've told my employers before, and some I haven't. It largely depends on our relationship.
