Hopefully the Astros team conduct a good lessons learned following the ALDS. What are YOUR observations of what worked well, and what needs improvement with corrective action. What worked well: Tucker HR, batting, slugging, OPS, and stolen bases Altuve HR, fielding DP, batting, slugging, BB, OPS, and stolen bases Correa 2B, Fielding DP, batting, slugging, BB, & OPS, Alvarez HR batting, slugging, BB, and OPS, Meyers batting, and stolen bases, and fielding Bregman batting 2B Brantley Batting 2B McCormick batting Yuli fielding DP McCullers - K, ERA Framber - K, Lo BB Pressly - K, ERA, Lo BB Graveman Stanek - K - Powerful reliever Maton - ERA, Lo BB C Javier - K Greinke - K, ERA - Lo BB What didn't work well and action to take. Pitcher selection: not playing Urquidy cost us Lance and Meyers. Luis, Yimi, Raley were bad choices. Yimi was a bad choice. Action: Use different pitching analysis, and if you need to stop the bleeding, regardless of inning, put in Stanek. Luis Garcia - Tanked. Action: Place as a reliever. Make Urquidy Starter after Framber .and Cristian Javier starter after Urquidy. Bring in Jake O on the roster. Have Greinke as a middle long reliever to any starter that gets into trouble, unless Greinke tanks. Brooks Raley - terrible against good hitting teams.. Action: leave him off postseason roster. Yimi - terrible ERA and easier to hit off . Action:. leave him off postseason roster- replace him with Bielak. Yuli batting (.176) 5-SO- Action: if he goes cold again, put Diaz in for a half game or longer if Diaz is hot hitter Maldonado awful batting (.067), 6-SO . Action: Put Castro in once you get to the bullpen (or after 5th inning). Yordan 6-SO - Action: Don't wait till you fall behind the count to swing the bat. You can do that with subpar pitching, but not in the postseason. What are YOURS?
Another lesson learned: Don't change your pitcher's routine (especially not an ace) in the playoffs aka Lance McCullers which may have lead to injury. take some tips from Dave Roberts on how to use a starting pitcher in relief. see game 5 ALDS vs Giants tonight.
McCullers was in normal rest. If it was yhe original schedule, it would have been an extra day if rest. Dave Roberts is awful.
You don’t change catcher’s mid-game. Idiotic. I don’t understand the fascination with Castro. Maldy is there for defense. It is not like Castro is hitting that much better. Jake O has been awful, but he will get his chance with LMJ’s injury. You don’t remove players in the middle of games unless it is a pinch hit situation. No way u pull the batting champ. You guys like to criticize Dusty, but these are some of dumbest ideas ive heard.
He's allowed 0, 1, or 2 ERs in 7 of his last 8 starts. The one start that he allowed more was just 3 ERs.
What Lance routine changed? He was on normal rest. Glad you weren't managing in 2017. You would have benched Springer in the WS since he was 3-30 after game 1. Yordan had an OPS close to 1.200.
1 re-sign Correa 2 Acclimate Alvarez to first base for two years down the line. 3 Never give up on Altuve. His defense was awful last year and incredible this post season. 4 Myers is the real deal. 5 We need to find an ace. I love Lance, but he is hurt once again. 6 Dusty is a terrible game manager and needs to go. If we win, it is in spite of him. 7 Tucker is the real deal. Sign him to extension now to save money. 8 Corey Lee needs his shot. Maldonado has been great on defense after he blew it last year, but by all counts Lee is pretty good behind the plate and no way can he be worse than Maldonado at the plate. 9 Our minor league has been so much better than they are given credit for. We have 4 legitimate CF options and lots of gifted pitchers. 10 Go ‘Stros
Kudos to Hemingway (love the moniker) for adding his LL and using his brain. He gets an A. The rest of you get an F (no surprise). McCuller's shortened routine: https://www.houstonchronicle.com/te...lers-forearm-tightness-a-concern-16528506.php McCullers made his start on a normal four days of rest but acknowledged his week of preparation was “shortened.” McCullers threw 62/3 scoreless innings in the Astros’ Game 1 victory Thursday but said he threw his between-start bullpen session and lifted weights later than normal.
Yordan didn't have an OPS of close to 1.200 in the ALDS? You'd really platoon Diaz and Yuli MID-GAME if Yuli gets/stays cold? Again, glad you weren't manager in 2017 when Springer entered the WS 3-27 and then went 0-4 in the 1st WS game and struck out all 4 times. You'd have benched or platooned him. Was Yimi a bad choice in game 1? You would have left him off the roster. He got what was arguably the most important out of the game.
