I always enjoyed going, but when something was out that I wanted to see, it was a bummer, and having instant access to every movie I want is a pro with streaming. It does suck that my kids can't enjoy that thrill of getting a movie or a game, a soda and some candy.

I could see one doing well as a retro/nostalgia place. I would go.

Nothing beat trying to discreetly go behind the "Adults Only" curtain at my local video store, hoping none of the other customers saw me.

Naw. I don't even have anything to watch a physical movie on in the living room....
The same way none of my computers in the house have a cd/dvd/blueray drive.....

100% streaming these days. Chromecast with Google TV + cinemaHD = perfection.

My first job was working at Blockbuster and it was glorious. The $5.75 an hour back in Summer of 2000 wasn't bad but the things you got to see/witness was worth it.

Vulcan Video in Austin was awesome, finally got done in by rising rent and the pandemic in 2020.

Our spot when we were kids was Video Today, Wesheimer and Wilcrest. Loved looking at the weirdass monster/horror movie vhs covers as a kid.

eta: The guy who owned it lived in our neighborhood, was really cool and he and his family became friends of ours. We never would have met them otherwise. I get the convenience factor of never leaving the house and buying everything online, but I feel bad for kids today: going to the toy/book/record/video store was fun as hell

    1. Make time to go to video store. (sometimes tough to do)
    2. Get in vehicle. Drive there, regardless of traffic. (time)
    3. Find a parking spot. (time)
    4. Browse store. Sometimes you don't know what you're browsing for. (time)
    5. Stand in line to check out. (time)
    6. Pop in the movie to your media player ($ for the player)
    7. Repeat steps 1-3 when you need to return the disk.

    Alternatively:
    1. Turn on your computer / smart TV.
    2. Press a few buttons. Watch a thing.

Regardless of boomer status, the amount of inefficiency in the first example is ridiculous. Especially step 7 when all you want to do is return the damn thing.

I watched that doc on Netflix and it was enjoyable (definite bias here) though it's kinda sad when the manager of that store has to go to Target/Walmart to buy the new releases to create inventory/stock for her Blockbuster.

Good times, nothing beats that feeling of going as a kid and turning over the empty boxes to see if the movie was available. I would also go to the drop off bin and request them to check if the new release was there, sometimes they were assholes and refused

Back then they didn't have internet to view trailers so I would rent movies based on the scariest cover case which turned out to be a bad cheesy movie.

I dont want to bring back video stores, but i do want to bring back the feeling that you were watching what every body else was watching or listening to. Streaming movies and music, pop culture and what's popular feels so disconnected if it isn't a viral squid game, stranger things show.

I remember working at the massive new Blockbuster distribution center/headquarters in the DFW area after it moved here from Florida. I've never worked at a place that was so advanced but also so backward. I never really rented movies since I really was never into movies as a kid, but I see the nostalgia people have to this day. I have friends that talk about renting movies and hanging out around movie rental places or working there after school.

It kind of sucks that until recently most of the crap that's streamed wasn't 4k. I'm not even sure what the percentage is now. It's like we take a step backwards to go forward for the sake of "convenience".

Streaming does still lack the quality of a nice 4K Bluray with Dolby Atmos. Nobody realizes how compressed the audio can sound via streaming, even when it's compatible in "Dolby Atmos".

My coworkers and I would routinely pull the new releases from the return bin and set them on the back counter so that it would be easy for us just to pull from that stack vs rummaging through a mountain of tapes in the return bin. That way if some snot nosed kid was wondering if Toy Story 2 was back I could just turn around and check without leaving my register. Yea, I let the power go to my head lol.
