Justin Fields (11th overall pick) vs Cleveland in a full game as a starter - 68 pass yds, 0 TD, 9 sacks. Davis Mills (67th overall pick) vs Cleveland in one half - 102 yards, 1 TD 1 INT, 1 sack, 7 sacks yards. And Mills is doing it, with the worst roster in the NFL, according to some experts, and some people here in clutchfans.
With respect to how he addresses questions and explains his thought processes, I already put Culley 100x ahead of Butt-Chin. Dude owns up to his mistakes too.
Keep in mind most commenters here won't pass up an excuse to combine their favorite pasttimes: reaching premature conclusions and whining
I have to admit I'm guilty of it, too. Out of frustration, I called him trash after missing the wide open post route in Cleveland. It's asking a lot of the guy with relatively little to no real preparation.
I'm with you. I guess a lot of the bashing for me personally comes from the frustration with the Deshaun situation, combined with the fact that he didn't have much "fan-fare" coming out of college. But so far, he's definitely performed like a rookie, who's coaching staff didn't quite put together the best plan for him... I expect him to improve over time, and be right there between Case Keenum and Tom Savage territory (not high praise, I know)
The Deshaun situation has nothing to do with whether this kid can play or not. So unfair to see everyone crapping on him considering the circumstances, and considering he is outperforming other QBs with more "fanfare". Even on draft day, pundits were saying this kid would be a first round pick if he stayed another year. In HS he was the #1 QB recruit so not exactly a chump. The only thing I expect is for him to get better with more experience. Putting a ceiling or floor on him this year is really just guesswork and if we want to be the kind of fans that deserve a better organization, we're going to have to be better too.
When I hear comments that compares him to the likes of tj Yates or tom savage, it kinda validates the harsh criticism posters have for him. Do not waste seasons on this dude if that is his ceiling.
That’s the problem, there is nothing to say that is his comparison. Besides people wanting him to fail. Neither of them had the pedigree or physical talent that Mills has
Some people dont like this fact. I'm interested to see if he can improve against the Bills and particularly against Belichick and the Pats defense.
I like what I've seen from Mills so far -- all things considered. He has a nice touch on the ball and seems composed (for a rookie) in the pocket/backfield. When he's got the ball (whether in the pocket or outside), he's looking downfield and analyzing -- that's a really good starting point. He's not panicking or immediately tucking the ball and running. Once the game slows down for him, he could evolve into a league-average quarterback. We may have dodged a bullet with some of the QBs at the top of the draft class -- they are struggling early on.
I agree Mills is a rookie in a man's game. No college boys allowed. It's going to take time to see what you have. All of these young QB's need seasoning. Very few light it up right away. But the Texans should keep bringing in QB talent until that role is filled. I don't care if you're drafting them yearly, because its that important. The Texans are rebuilding so the organization can be patient with Mills this year.
I agree, it's not fair. I'm just saying sub-consciously fans (myself included) want to have Deshaun level production in a rookie 3rd round QB. Ultimately it's not gonna happen, but that does contribute to the quick frustration we have. As for his ceiling, I ultimately think he could be very solid, I just don't know if he's got the extremely high ceiling people will want. As far as comparing him to Case/Tom Savage, they both had moments where the fanbase thought they were both extremely serviceable, then they also had moments where we didn't. I think he can fit in the same category. He just looks like a little bit of a statue, but once the Texans start going more no huddle, and catering the game to him, he'll be fine.... Will he be "Deshaun's replacement fine" I doubt it.... but anything's possible.
Oh for sure, I think we were all spoiled to some degree by how good Watson was and how quickly that happened. And we've never slowly developed a QB that turned out to even be average. It does happen though, but we've never seen it first hand with this franchise. Personally I'm just going to hope for the best with this kid because there is potential there. Whether he reaches it or not is anyone's guess, but hopefully we can have a decently good time as we slowly find out
