Sorry, I didn't see your reply until now, Manny. Others have already pretty much expressed my feelings on SOAD. They have a different style of singing, but I would never call it rap. It is part of why I love them so much. They are quite original.

Also, I quoted Pimp's post above because I thought the part where he talks about seeing them live bore repeating. I have seen a decent amount of metal bands live, but few I have seen generate the energy that these guys do on-stage. I have seen them twice now, and both of them were absolute, drag-out kickass concerts.

Okay, okay....y'all have convinced me about System of a Down. I don't know where I got that impression of them, but because they have been spoken highly here, I will definitely try them out.

Pimp:

I have heard of Clutch, vaguely, but I will have to give them a listen. I still need to get a Kyuss CD!;)

DC:

Haven't heard of At the Drive In, but I will give them a look.

XPAC:

I have seen some people classify Soundgarden as a metal band as well as Alice in Chains, although many feel that those 2 bands along with Nirvana and Pearl Jam were the fearsome foursome of grunge. I can see both sides but I think that unlike Nirvana and Pearl Jam which are great rock bands, both Soundgarden and AIC can be rock and heavy metal if that makes any sense. Sorta the same with Smashing Pumpkins. They definitely have some grunge sounding stuff, but I think people would look at you funny if you said the Pumpkins were a grunge band.

subtomic:

Good post as always. You always amaze me with your musical knowledge.

Htownhero:

I love "discovering" new stuff. Just in the last couple of months, I have gotten stuff by Pantera, Judas Priest, Danzig, and Type O Negative that has been awesome. Any chance of finding new things (to me) is always welcomed. I just ordered "Chaos A.D." by Sepultura last night and eagerly await its arrival.

Besides System of a Down, Kyuss, Clutch, Death, Carcass, and Dream Theater, I will also give Cold a try plus the first Godsmack album.

Damn...I wish I had an endless supply of money so I could get all the CDs I want!:)

BTW - I have Tool's first 3 CDs (don't have the Opiate EP) and I absolutely love "Undertow" and "Aenima". My favorite Tool songs would have to be "Sober", "Swampsong", and "Stinkfist". I was a little disappointed as well in "Lateralus". Oh and I have Another Perfect Circle's CD. I love it, too especially "3 LIbras".

Let me ask if anybody likes Orgy or Snot and what you think about them.

Thanks to all who have given me suggestions.

Yeah, I think you'd like it. The album to get is Relationship of Command. It got a lot of critical praise and ended up selling a million copies or something. Voted 5th best album of 2000 by NME and SPIN. Not too shabby when a band from El Paso, Texas gets that sort of recognition by NME.

Some of these have some kind of rap in them, but they are all good:
From Zero
Simon Says
40 Below Summer
Boy Hits Car
Tenacious D is awesome.

P.S.-KORN SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, you do. If you end up liking Kyuss, you'll next need to check out Queens of the Stoneage.

Sepultura...I haven't listened to anything from them in years. I think I used to have Chaos A.D. You should also check out Roots.

Oh, and ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead are kinda heavy rocky too. Like err, maybe Sonic Youth, but heavier and punkier. Support your fellow Texans and pick up their album "Source Tags and Codes."

First off,
Thanks for all the suggestions on stuff to listen to...
That rap/rock sheet that seems to be dominating the airwaves is not too my liking and I haven't even heard of alot of these.

Anyway, I have a favor to ask...
Could someone be more specific about groups that may interest a confirmed old-school Heavy Metal fanatic with progressive leanings (ie...Iron Maiden/Dream Theater/ Fates Warning/Savatage-type) I'm always receptive to any good bands that carry on the rich traditions of 70's/80's heavy metal.

;)

This is not related to anything in this thread, really, but I hate starting new threads, and I felt it needed to be expressed.

A friend of mine just sent me a copy of Sepultura's song "Roots, Bloody Roots." Okay, I am a casual Sepultura fan. I like some of their stuff, it is a bit hard for me at times, especially lately, but I dig on it to some degree.

The copy he sent me, however, was the baddest ass song I have ever heard (warning: exaggeration coming based on adrenaline flow from recently hearing this great song).

In this version of "Roots, Bloody Roots", the famous opera singer Pavarotti of the Three Tenors sings with them in the background, and some orchestral strings are added in to various spots as well. All in all, it makes it sound like a ****ing ass kicking metal freaking opera, and I love it, man. I love the **** out of this song.

Any Sepultura fans, I highly suggest you do a quick search on Kazaa or anything else for this song, and give it a listen. Good stuff, dudes. Good stuff.

Manny, I think we have a different definition of "metal". I have a pretty specific one.....Anthrax, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, early Metallica, Slayer, Sepultura, Pantera....that's metal to me. Pantera is probably the only semi-popular "metal" band out there today. In other words, I don't think there is a lot of "new metal" out there right now, that isn't underground. "Nu-metal" and "metal" are two completely different things in my mind.

Since you listed bands like Danzig (who I don't consider to be metal) and Soundgarden as "old school", I'm afraid there aren't any "new" bands I like (or maybe I'd like them if I was aware of them) that I would put in the metal genre! Queens of the Stone Age might be the closest.

Nu-Metal is my favorite genre of music. Ever since Woodstock 99 happened, Limp Bizkit has been my fav band.
