Chayce McDermott allowed an unearned run on a wild pitch, a hit, walked one, and struck out five in four innings of work for Fayetteville. McDermott has 23 strikeouts in four appearances (2 starts, 12.2 IP) since he moved up.
What if he becomes Semien with the bat and Adames with the glove? I think he can be a much better fielder than Semien and good with the bat but not near as good as Semien, who's about to hit forty HR's this yr. That's still a top 5 SS.
Tyler Whitaker hit his 2nd HR in the FCL today. Average up to .210 and ops over 600. Also Korey Lee is back in the AA lineup tonight.
Corey Julks (14) and Wilyer Abreu (13) both had multi-homer games tonight. Carlos Calderon didn't allow a hit and struck out four over four scoreless for Fayetteville... but he also walked five.
Don’t wanna overreact but it’s reasonable to view Michael Sandle more positively after his early returns in Fayetteville. He has a .301/.363/.575 slash line with a 147 wRC+, 6 HR and 6 SB in 124 pa, spending time across all 3 OF spots. Like I said, not to overreact and he shouldn’t be on anybody’s org top 10 or anything but so far he looks more promising than the average under slot 10th draft pick, and he’s on the radar for a potential breakout next season.
Sugar Land Jeremy Pena hit a solo homer in the 9th and scored three runs in the Skeeters' 9-1 win over Round Rock. Drew Butera had a three-run blast and J.J. Matijevic also went deep; he now has 23 homers this year. Jonathan Bermudez allowed a run on a solo homer, three other hits, walked two, and struck out four in five innings. Corpus Christi Angel Macuare, Jonathan Sprinkle, and Felipe Tejada combined to allow two hits in a 1-0 Corpus win. Macuare allowed a hit, walked three, and struck out six in six innings. Sprinkle allowed a hit and fanned three in two innings, and Tejada worked around a two-out error to finish the game, striking out one. The one run came on a Corey Julks RBI double. Asheville Yainer Diaz has four home runs in his last five games, giving him 15 on the year. Luis Guerrero (3), Deury Carrasco (4), Alex Holderbach (12 with Asheville, 13 season), and C.J. Stubbs (10) also homered for the Tourists as they blasted Rome 15-3. Diosmerky Taveras was the first reliever out for Asheville and he allowed a hit, walked two, and struck out six in 2.2 scoreless.
Jordan Brewer and Justin Williams both scored three runs for Fayetteville. Brewer finished 3-4 with a two-run homer (6) and Williams also went deep for his 5th home run. Williams was also the starting SS, which marked his first appearance at 6, and as a result, he's now played all four infield positions for the Woodpeckers. Heitor Tokar allowed a run on three hits and struck out six in four innings to get the win. Jacob DeLabio allowed a run for the first time as a pro but he managed to close out a 9-8 Fayetteville win. DeLabio has 18 strikeouts in 7.2 innings this year between the FCL and Fayetteville.
Our player development seems to be in very good hands. With another nice international free agent class and having all of our picks back starting in the next draft- the front office has done a hell of a job identifying players and is continuing to churn out quality big league talent.
A, High A, and AA seasons end on Sep 19, so only ~30 pa left for prospects at those levels. I do wonder if Joe Perez or Korey Lee will be moved up to AAA for those last 3 weeks. The Skeeters lineup could be absolutely stacked next season: C Lee 1B Gonzalez 2B Pena/Leon SS Pena/Leon 3B Perez RF Siri CF Dawson LF Matijevic DH Costes Bench: Papierski, Manea, Julks, De Goti (or Sierra, Hinojosa, Shaver)
Looking forward to seeing him play in the majors. Always thought his dad got a bad rap here. Sure he was pudgy, and not great on defense, but he’d get you 25-30 home runs and 85-110 rbi every year.
