I know this topic has been discussed before, but here me out. My problem is that every time I get on-online, I get the advertisement pop-ups. Now I have downloaded Spybot - search and destroy based on recommendations by other members on this site. I have used the program twice this morning and both times, spyware is detected and I have click the "fix the problem" button. However, I still continue to get the advertisements after this procedure. Is there somehting else I need to do to make the pop-ups going away.

you have spyware that is more deeply rooted in your system than spybot can handle. you need to find out where those ads are coming from, then do a google search and see if there's a removal tool for them.

sometimes spyware gets rooted real deep in your system and there are more involved steps in removing the malicious software. there may be registry tweaks involved.

    good luck

Do you have a recommendation as to how I would get started in trying to find out the location of the spyware. I am simply not the smartest computer person out there. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

well... you gotta figure out where the pop ups are coming from. the next time a pop up pops up, do a right click on it and check PROPERTIES, get the web address. Post that here and see if there's anything we can help with next.

also, is it a specific site the pop up happens on or is it just anytime? have you installed any toolbars or search bars? are you using MOZILLA FIREFOX or at least a google toolbar with pop up blocker? what browser are you using?

    (1) get ad-adware also. Do a deep root register scan.

    (2) Get Hijackthis (you can find it with google). Check the log it yourself with online help. or post your log on a forum and hope someone can help you.

Hijackthis is the most powerful. It log everthing starts with your browser, but it does take some knowledge to recognize which one is the spayware and delete them.

Choose "Show hidden files" in your view tool before you search and delete files.

Disable System Restore, at least for the time being.

Also, set Spybot S+D to run at startup (it's an option in there somewhere) on the next boot -- that way, it'll get it before everything starts. Make sure Spybot S+D is updated, and make sure you've got the newest 1.3 version, which is hugely awesome. Also use:

    Adaware
    Mozilla Firefox

Use both Spybot and Adaware to get rid of spyware on your machine, and use Mozilla Firefox as your web browser. It blocks popups, doesn't let sites install spyware, and has a lot of great features.

Guys, thanks for all the advice.

RH, I am using IE and I do have the google tool bar installed with the pop-up blocker. Here is one of the ads http://spe.atdmt.com/b/CLCLHTRUBTRU/600x400_25_tb_mic_cfw_def.gif

The ads seem to come up and any time. I will go and download adaware and see if that helps. Once again guys, thanks.

Ok, I just ran ad-aware and on the scanning results page it show that there are 158 items. Of the items they are broken into categories of data miner or malware. Should I have ad-aware delete all these items.

Here is another question: When I turn my computer on and the desktop loads up, if I pull up the task manager by doing a control-alt-delete, it says that I have like 30 programs running in addition to explorer. I've run adaware and spybot, yet this doesn't affect these background programs at all. Their names make me suspicious of them (Motmon, PTsnoop, etc). How can I kill these?

Those are called weapons of mass destruction.

They are found in your computer. What are they doing in Iraq?
