The problem with fentanyl is drug dealers don't have scales sensitive to microgram values, and most of them try to eyeball it. And and you cant visually determine the difference between a really good dose and an "instant death" dose, so the whole thing is junkie version of chugging a bottle of horse dewormer dosed for large ungulates.

Autopsy: Actor Michael K. Williams died of drug intoxication

Williams, known for playing Omar Little on “The Wire” and an Emmy Award nominee this year, had fentanyl, parafluorofentanyl, heroin and cocaine in his system when he died Sept. 6 in Brooklyn.

So what happened was that fentanyl was prescribed often and people became addicted to their prescriptions. At the same time drug dealers were getting fentanyl at a lower price than heroin and they were selling it as cheaper alternative than heroin or they were cutting the purity levels of heroin.

Then there was an outrage because some that were addicted to fentanyl prescriptions were taking to many and were overdosing. So the response in the medical community was to not prescribe fentanyl often and not to chronic users. As a result the cost of fentanyl on the streets blew up. So many fentanyl addicts went to the streets to buy it, but couldn't afford it and bought heroin as a substitute.

In response China began producing lots of fentanyl and selling it mail order in the USA. Also, there were some distribution issues with heroin due to instability in the cartels and what was going on in Afghanistan. So drug dealers were buying the fentanyl compounds cheap from China and pushing it even harder on the streets and at very low costs. So you had heroin addicts buy it.

Fentanyl is extremely dangerous because it takes very little to overdose and kill someone. Further, drug dealers do not know how pure the fentanyl is from China so it is a crap shoot on how much fentanyl they are mixing with heroin when they sell it on the streets. Further, drug addicts want a stronger high so they prefer a higher percentage of fentanyl often. So successful drug deals increase the fentanyl amount. That resulted in more people overdosing and a lot of heroin addicts don't realize how little fentanyl it takes to overdose and die.

Currently the market for fentanyl and heroin are essentially the same market in most of the USA. Most heroin addicts are in fact getting some fentanyl in their rig. Because the prices have been up and down for both heroin and fentanyl, most addicts will take either one.

Hypoxia, which is an overdose from too much oxygen in the brain is what happens during an overdose and people stop breathing or enter a long term coma.

Fentanyl is 10-20 X as potent as heroin. So usually it takes 30 mg of heroin to risk overdose and death (not a lot) but it only takes 3 mg of fentanyl. So even experienced addicts are overdosing and dying. The last I read about 75% of new drug deaths are from fentanyl. The high mixed with heroin is amazing, but it is a recipe for death.

 

Just don't do drugs

 

3-6 mg of fentanyl is enough to kill someone..... it makes their system shut down and death or a coma follows. If someone has narcan and administers it with 2-3 minutes, they may survive (50/50).

30-60 mg of heroin is enough for most people to overdose and die. Narcan is almost always successful if administered in a few minutes.

Exactly. Long term fentanyl is bad for the illegal drug market in the USA because it kills people because of its potency. However drug dealers always think short term, and in the short term it is incredibly cheap to get from China and gives a strong high... so it is mixed in cocaine, MDMA, heroin and even meth.

You couldn't pay me any amount of money to take street fentanyl. You can be in a hospital, overdose and they still cannot save you almost half the time.

 

So much for my bucket list item of "take more Ecstasy". It can now be cut with Fentanyl or be this thing known as "Molly"...which may or may not be Ecstasy and may or may not have Fentanyl on top of that.

you can't sell drugs to your customers if they die immediately, you want them to take the drug for a long sustain period of time to generate more revenue, if someone dies, at least you maximized your potential income

this is why it's rare that the cartel targets gringos in mexico, cause gringos are their customers
