(Except for the championship) Just talking game resemblance here: Garnett // Olajuwon Sprewell // Drexler Cassell // Cassell Hassell // Elie
In all honesty, Garnett maybe great, but with his size, he plays out on the perimeter too much for my liking. So I think its hard to compare the effect he has on the game to Hakeem.
Sorry, I just don't see it as you do. Garnett has not risen up and taken the team on his back ala Hakeem. Spree is not Clyde. Clyde just did more little, contributing things and more big things, too. Sammy is hurt now, so his matured play is negated compared to his youthful exuberance of then. Hassell // Elie? See Clyde, though not as much so. Kenny added more than Martin; Wally v Horry is not a good comparitor.
I definitely see a Garnett/Olajuwon similarity. Games are a little different and KG has been less successful. But, impact is similar in that they can both put up some ungodly numbers.
comparing a KG to a 1995 Dream is a direct insult to the man that brought us 2 championships. I have yet to see KG dominate more than 2 playoff games this year, much less a whole series. If he had Dream's determination, KG would have made Malone his b**** by now.
I think the real insult is comparing Sprewell to Drexler, just taking into account their play on the court. Sprewell is the ultimate wild card: he seems to either be utterly inept or a huge boost for the team; it feels like there's no in-between with him. Drexler? Hall of Famer, and the second-best shooting guard during the Jordan era, even if he wasn't in his prime in his Houston years.
If they can win 3 straight to beat the Lakers, then we can come back and discuss whether they are like the '95 Rockets.
If you didn't follow the NBA, and just turned on a Wolves-Laker game, you would have no idea that Kevin Garnett is the MVP. He has some good numbers, but he does not dominate a game (at least in this series).
Uh ... ahem ... I said "just talking game resemblance." Not: "Just talking playoff success" or "big-game performance." Garnett's game is very much like Hakeem's. Not as good, but the same type. Uncanny athleticism for his size. Gazelle-like moves. Incredible subtlety. Sprewell -- have you guys who think he doesn't contribute in other ways been watching the playoffs? He's playing top-notch D. And I forgot the most striking physical resemblance: Flip // Rudy. Flip's got the face, the expressions, the walk, the hand gestures, the whole thing. Everything but the two hands skyward when one of his guys shoots the 3.
i agree with you completely will. My brother and I have been saying that all season. It has nothing to do with which team is better, they are just damn similar on the court. And to me, that makes it more enjoyable to watch. Too bad they look like they are gonna lose to karla.
Overall I agree. Garnett has to step it up though. He needs to shock the world! Put the team on his shoulders. If that happens, then comparing Hakeem to Garnett wont seem like blasphemy. Garnett needs a 40/20 game! A legend will be born! Carry the team, and then let Spree and team fill in the lose ends. Having KG step it up will inspire his team to believe!
Garnett isn't really less successful than Olajuwon was at this point in his career. Aside from the Finals in 86, the Rockets were consistenly first round losers in the playoffs, up until they really broke out the year before they won they championship and even that loss to Seattle was a second round loss.
Hakeem played the likes of the Showtime Lakers and Bird's Celtics. Garnett hasn't played any teams near that caliber.
