woah! i mean, dude was 80 and did his share of partying, but its still a shocker. didn't he have to take a leave of absence from the stones recently? i dont think the stones can continue without him. and i think this might be the sad start of a lot of that era dying off - beatles, zep, kinks, stones, ect...theyre all in their 80s
i know what im listening to all day... i never really thought of him as one of the all-time great drummers, but he was the heartbeat and swing of that band. i think he was actually a jazz drummer and brought that approach to his playing. he was ringo-esque in his creativity and discipline in terms of playing to the song. great feel and style. without him it would be been a totally different band.
The beating heart of the Rolling Stones. Other than Mick and Keith, he was the only one to appear on every Stones record. Rest at a beat.
Sad day in rock history. I admit that the the drummer of the Stones was the most overlooked by me because you always had Mick and Keith in the forefront doing their thing. But, Charlie set the all important tempo beautifully in that band. The Stones won’t be the same. It will be sad to see the Stones play without him. They might want to hang it up. Tough call. RIP
Sad day indeed. Last year the show was cancelled due to covid. The Austin show was rescheduled for Nov 20 and I was planning to go when visiting family around thanksgiving. Wonder if they'll cancel or reschedule with a different drummer. It won't be the same.
When the Beatles and Pink Floyd members are gone it will be especially sad. That era is is almost completely in the past now. Along with Bob Marley Janis Morrison and Hendrix dying young. Depressing stuff.
TBH, 80 is pretty impressive for a band member that partied through the 60s and 70s…and 80s and 90s and 00s and teens. RIP
Neil Peart of Rush meeting Charlie Watts just before Rush took the stage at SARSFest in Toronto back in 2003. Two greats died in back-to-back years. Strange how that worked out.
