I haven't watched Clerks II so not sure what to think. But I saw a long interview with Kevin Smith and he said he wouldn't do something like this anymore because he realizes he is not that person anymore and the movie wouldn't be authentic. So I'm surprised to hear this.
I guess he's trying to make the whole "closure coming full circle" move with this one. Once again, I know I'm in the minority but I LOVED Clerks 2.
I hope this means he's done writing + directing (combo) his own brainchild projects, and not that he's done writing and/or directing altogether. That said, I thought Clerks 2 was pretty lame and have almost no desire to see a third. Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back was marginally amusing, though.

I was always ambivalent about Smith's movies and thought Clerks 2 was dated; but between his XM podcasts, Dinner for Five appearances and recorded Q&A sessions I'm glad he's still working enough to be relevant; really, really like the guy. Unfortunately I think the only reason this is being made is because those principals have never gotten big mainstream careers, I think that short guy in Clerks 2 they got in an argument with about sci-fi trilogies is better known than they are.
So what I gather is that he is not writting or directing this one he is just producing it. I almost thought Clerks 2 was better than the original.
No he said he'd continue directing other people's work but this is his last sole creation. The official final chapter to his View Askew universe.
It's finally in production. Vanity Fair has a nice writeup on it. https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2021/08/clerks-3-first-look This first-look image from Clerks III shows they’re still selling cigarettes, slushies, and skin mags while serving their life sentences at the Quick Stop. Nowadays the pair own the store. They’re joined by Dante’s wife, Becky (Rosario Dawson), and the formerly upbeat, formerly teenage Elias (Trevor Fehrman), who were drawn into the not-so-dynamic duo’s slacker vortex in 2006’s Clerks II. Time has taken a toll on them, as it has in real life for Smith, 51—whose decision to return to Clerks came by way of a severe heart attack three years ago. “The film is predicated on the idea that Randal survives a heart attack, a massive heart attack, quite like I did, and then winds up, you know, deciding that he’s wasted his life,” Smith tells Vanity Fair. “But before he dies he wants to memorialize himself. He wants to make a movie. So our boys essentially wind up making Clerks.”
Kevin Smith jumped the shark a while ago. I'll probably wait until it comes on HBO or something if I watch it at all
I don't know. Clerks is an iconic Gen-X movie, like Singles, that really captured that angst and frustrated, sarcastic vibe that was going on in the early-mid 90's. There are movies that shouldn't have sequels or reboots. This is probably one of them. I'll wait for reviews.
