NBC is horrible with that phrase. The threat is real though. We still remember the attacks on the government buildings in 2020 and the plot to arrest the governor over covid restrictions.

National Terrorism Advisory System Bulletin - August 13, 2021 | Homeland Security (dhs.gov)
    • Foreign and domestic threat actors, to include foreign intelligence services, international terrorist groups and domestic violent extremists, continue to introduce, amplify, and disseminate narratives online that promote violence, and have called for violence against elected officials, political representatives, government facilities, law enforcement, religious communities or commercial facilities, and perceived ideologically-opposed individuals. There are also continued, non-specific calls for violence on multiple online platforms associated with DVE ideologies or conspiracy theories on perceived election fraud and alleged reinstatement, and responses to anticipated restrictions relating to the increasing COVID cases.

National Terrorism Advisory System Bulletin - January 27, 2021 | Homeland Security (dhs.gov)
    • Throughout 2020, Domestic Violent Extremists (DVEs) targeted individuals with opposing views engaged in First Amendment-protected, non-violent protest activity. DVEs motivated by a range of issues, including anger over COVID-19 restrictions, the 2020 election results, and police use of force have plotted and on occasion carried out attacks against government facilities.

The DHS renewed their terror threat advisory, the last one having expired recently, and this is only listing potential factors that could could motivate someone to commit an act of terrorism. It is not equating opposition to COVID measures with terrorism. It just so happens that a fair number of these people are deranged conspiracy-promoting kooks.

    https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2021/08/homeland-security-warns-covid-restrictions-attacks.html

Domestic extremist groups could use the new restrictions meant to stem the spread of COVID-19 as an excuse to launch attacks, the Department of Homeland Security warned. “Pandemic-related stressors have contributed to increased societal strains and tensions, driving several plots by domestic violent extremists, and they may contribute to more violence this year,” warned the Department of Homeland Security in its latest terrorism bulletin.

The risk of attacks surrounding COVID-19 restrictions is an example of how online forums that spread conspiracy theories have also called for violence. “Actors are increasingly exploiting online forums to influence and spread violent extremist narratives and promote violent activity,” reads the bulletin. “Such threats are also exacerbated by impacts of the ongoing global pandemic, including grievances over public health safety measures and perceived government restrictions.” Amid the emergence of new COVID-19 variants, the potential for new restrictions could become “a rationale to conduct attacks,” according to the Department of Homeland Security.

    Unvaccinated America, In 5 Charts

By Elena Mejía Published Aug. 13, 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic is now, more than ever, a story about the unvaccinated. They’re the most vulnerable — in states reporting breakthrough infections, over 90 percent of cases, hospitalizations and deaths have occurred among people who are unvaccinated or not yet fully vaccinated, according to a study from the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF). And this significant pool of Americans may open the door for even more dangerous mutations than the delta variant — nearly twice as contagious than previous strains — that could challenge the effectiveness of existing vaccines.

So who, exactly, are we talking about? Three in 10 American adults remain unvaccinated, according to the latest survey from the KFF. But they’re not a monolith — their reasons, backgrounds, politics and willingness to eventually get vaccinated all vary...

    (my favorite charts)

The constituents of both parties are supposed to hate the Government, but you basically have Dems scared of the crazy Republicans, looking to the Democratic Government for any semblance of sanity.

Then you have Republicans running on a platform of - do not trust Government, vote for us, even though we're uh, Government (and BIG government too, the kind that also really like a lot of police and military working for them).

    Lulz.

    Good luck, suckers.

They have to be specific. I'm sure that was cut from a long list of scenarios...Aussies always find a drinking loophole.

If you ever needed a case study for why vaccines are important, look at Australia. They managed to get covid down to zero and it now doesn't matter because delta is breaking through the most strict lockdowns in the world. New South Wales is close to hitting 500 cases a day now despite people there basically being locked in their houses. My Australian colleagues were proudly describing their return to normal life a few months ago but the country got complacent and didn't procure enough vaccines.

Now they're stuck with perpetual lockdowns because only 20% of the population is currently fully vaccinated. Australia also has no equivalent of the bill of rights so the Australian government has free reign to prohibit Australians from coming to or leaving the country. So the lockdowns are the harshest in the democratic world.

Did they open up their border too soon? New Zealand is still hovering in the single-digit in new cases. They are an amazing case study of near-zero covid (and aiming for zero) without vaccines (~22% vaccinated) ... so far. New Zealand hasn't opened up its border (won't do so until 2022) since March 2020 with few exceptions and very strict requirements for travel in/out of the country.

They never opened the border (except to New Zealand). Australia was also at near zero covid cases as well. The issue is that Australia has a lot more citizens living abroad and it is suspected that returning Australians brought the delta variant into the quarantine hotels and their safety protocols didn't prevent it from escaping the hotels.

New Zealand has the benefit of being a small country with a very limited number of its citizens living abroad. Australia didn't have that luxury. New Zealand has been equally slow to vaccinate. They both more or less did the same things with the only difference that Australia had to deal with a much larger population of citizens living abroad.

But being the much larger country, Australia shouldn't have banked on being able to simply control the entry of the virus like New Zealand. This is ultimately why you need vaccines. You can't win this war forever. Taiwan similarly had a surge in cases but given that they are a small country, they were able to lockdown and bring the case count back under control (to New Zealand levels).
