How long is respectable before we can order Jalen Green and Sengun jerseys? I was impressed by both of them.
I'm no scout but I do pay attention to "the little things" in terms of how well players do the basics/fundamentals. He didn't really take many bad shots - I thought he did a great job facilitating the offense and taking what was given. JC was the ball hog - Green I thought spread the ball around when the defense started to key on him. You got the sense there were times Cleveland's defense didn't care who scored as long as it wasn't Green(Green and Okoro were jawing all game) and he rightfully moved the ball along in those instances. There were definitely some "there is no where for him to go, where is he going with this?" moments and to his credit his footwork is so strong and his first step so explosive that he was able to create space that I didn't think was there to generate a good shot. Maybe that was what you were seeing in the highlights...but he had a few really great quick passes that didn't get assists, but I thought were excellent reads of the defense. A couple in particular I thought JC botched but JG caught JC's defender leaning to help and he fired a quick pass to JG on the wing that probably would have been a decent 3pt look for a player with better fundamentals but JC wasn't in sliding fast enough to be in position to take an easy set shot. Also spotted a few nice skip passes from Green - nothing earth shattering but some one armed passes to reverse the action that shows A. he has the strength to deliver those long passes and B. he was reading more than just the defense immediately around him. The scoring I expected but I was impressed that he was initiating the offense mostly. I wouldn't necessarily say his playmaking was getting other guys buckets(he needs work using screens more effectively for sure) but he was definitely playing within the flow of the team concept. ....the offense was "sloppy" in general - it was obvious the guys were still picking up where to be and how to move when off ball(particularly JC). There was definitely some spacing issues too but I think those are all to be expected from what was it - 2 or 3 practices so far? I guess my point is - take this all with a grain of salt because this was a small step up from pickup ball given the limited number of practices.
My grades for Summer League game 1 are: Green: A+ - epic first step, epic quickness, versatile, great energy Sengun: A - high motor, high IQ, disruptive defense, great footwork, mediocre finishing and verticality Martin: A - good activity, decent defense, good shooting, some questionable shot selection Christopher: C- - erratic, out of control, reminded me of Russell Westbrook style offense, good defensive hustle Thomas: D - active, decent defensively, good communicator, couldn't hit a jumper at all Lamb: C - defensively solid, decent rotator, non-contributor offensively Foster: D - vanilla, couldn't hit a jumper at all, would have to rewatch the tape to notice him defensively Hurt: D- - terrible telegraphed passing, looked a step slow and timid Garuba: DNP Brooks: DNP
I mean I'm not grading his career, just that game. He has a chance to improve and the tools are there but I thought he had a little too much caffiene. EDIT: I upgraded him to a C- and downgraded Foster to a D.
Why would you give Foster a C, who was a blip on the radar, compared to Christopher getting a D? Josh C. was erratic, but showed signs of play that can help this team. I would Christopher a B- for his play.
I just adjusted those with an edit. Foster was a D. Christopher C-. I'm not really looking at their future projections, just that game. I don't feel like 33% shooting with 0-4 from 3 and 3 turnovers while looking like he drank an 8 pack of Red Bull deserves B range. I'd put Okoro in B+/A- range for the Cavs. Not everyone can get A's in my class, I like bell curves. Christopher could easily be an A next game. The C instead of D was for a couple nice passes and his defensive activity.
I was grading on yesterday's game - have no clue about future. He could be a core guy on the bench, bench warmer, or G-Leaguer......only time will tell. Yes, he was excited for his 1st professional game, but was all over the place. In that craziness, I did some things that he can help the team with, but he just needs to calm it down, establish chemistry, and adjust to his teammates.
Lol this is ridiculous. Who does House think he is? Should have never remained with the team after the bubble.
I was extremely impressed by Green. He scored in a variety of ways without dominating the ball or seemingly making a single mistake. He flashed his first step, finishing, step back ability, and some good passes. The kid is just a natural. Sengun had some problems finishing around the hoop, but was always active. Even without being the best athlete and giving up a few inches to Mobley he dominated the boards. His feel for the game is just fantastic, he puts in the work off ball to get in scoring position and when he does have the ball he's decisive. He was also a willing passer. I'm very impressed. JC had a rough start, but overall I thought his performance was okay. He's got some growing to do. He was way too aggressive early, driving into the defense with terrible results. When he tried to do less he made better plays on both ends of the court. I was a bit disappointed with Khyri Thomas because he spoiled us with some monster games at the end of the season. I expected him to look the most seasoned but he was outshined by all the other starters IMO.
C is harsh also. His defense is already elite. He is going to get a lot of playing time some time this season. May start at RGV for a while. He will be better at offense once the coaches get ahold of him.
House lost 4 family members in a car accident this year. I wouldn’t give up the number if I was him either.
This shirt number talk is ****ing ridiculous. Jalen Green is a rookie who did well in a Summer League game. He shouldn't be getting House's number if House wants to keep it, and that should be the end of it.
I'm no fan of House, but he's had that number for three years already. It's not a big ego move to want to keep it. Most players aren't forced to switch just because the new hot prospect comes in.
Most players didn't get kicked out of the playoff bubble. Veteran privileges should go to veterans that act like veterans.
