[2021 NBA Draft; 23rd overall] Rockets select Usman Garuba

Garuba has caught the attention of a lot of people with
his play at the Olympics. Many of us here at CF's recognized this
before the Olympics.



Good for Garuba and the Rockets

 

I honestly didnt know why there wasnt much hype for Garuba, everybody was jizzing over Bam a year ago and it even catapulted Okungwu to no 4 spot last year.

Fast forward a year, Garuba is a similar type of player but he lasted all the way to 23.

 

Really nice find, @ApacheWarrior. A heck of a lot of highlights, many of them going along with what the guy was saying about Garuba, some I haven't seen before. I've been excited about the guy and still can't believe he fell to us. Crazy good luck.

 

Garuba's FLOOR is Luc Mbah a Moute.

 

That's what I said, that he Luc now, just without the injury concerns due to being... well, not old.

 

I was thinking Capela right now. Capela was a poor FT shooter starting out
and doesn't shoot 3's. Garuba needs to improve on that 60% FT shooting
and easily has Capela in the 3-pt department.

 

I still can't believe we got him at 23.

I see most front offices are still underrating european players. Jokic and Doncic didn't teach them yet. Garuba and Sengun will be next in line.

He was ranked second in projected wARP amongst draft prospects by Kevin Pelton, only behind Sengun

 

The kid will produce sooner than later. He's been playing pro ball for years, and now he comes to a legaue in which he will be used more and where he can be more impactful.
Would be great if we can get a Garuba-Cade matchup in SL and see if his defense is as good as advertised.

Fun fact ... both he and Alperen are younger than Jalen Green. Alperen just turned 19 a couple of weeks ago. Dang.

 

Sengun is great and all as an 18 yr old MVP, but tbh I'm more hyped with Garuba than with Sengun.

I just think Garuba is the highest floor big man in the entire draft, even higher than Mobley. You know you'll get an athletic version of Draymond Green/PJ Tucker at the very least, and a defensive specialist big man is def value at 23.

 

3rd actually. But he was MVP of Euroleague at 18 and shouldve been #1 on everyone’s list

 

Dang is right. I was so pumped about getting the #2 pick, thinking before we found out that with our luck, we'd be down at #18 royally ticked off (to put it mildly), looking up at OKC taking our pick. Picks #23 and 24 were great to have, but I really thought we'd package one in an effort to move up.

I never in a million years expected to keep both, move up to #16 with 2 of our least valuable future 1st rounders, and grab Sengun. That shocked the hell out of me, but that Garuba would fall to #23? I would have made a hundred dollar bet to the Tip Jar that he wouldn't.

This draft ended up beyond great, whatever that is, in my humble opinion. Our luck is back.

Can play the Capela role almost instantly

This is why I don't see Garuba doing much time in the G-league
