Surprise dip in UK COVID cases baffles researchers

Daily recorded infections have more than halved since mid-July. Few researchers anticipated such a sharp decline, and they are now struggling to interpret it.

“Nobody really knows what’s going on,” says epidemiologist John Edmunds at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). In particular, it’s not clear whether this sudden trend indicates that the peak of the third wave has passed, or whether it is a blip caused by complex social factors.

Because there is a seasonality aspect to this virus that nobody seems to want to acknowledge. The US cases will likely have a similar dip soon, and instead of seasonality it will be attributed to all the re-masking that people did that has never really proven to make any significant difference.

Fortunate for them that the UK has different seasons than other places in world where cases are going up.

I had the same question posted in the Tinman's famous hangout covid thread last week.

Then I saw this. If true, it explains most of it. Same link shows very little covid vaccine hesitancy (4%) in UK.

"An estimated 93.6% of the adult population in England, 93.2% in Wales, 90.7% in Northern Ireland and 92.5% in Scotland tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies in the week beginning 12 July 2021. The presence of antibodies suggests a person previously had COVID-19 or has been vaccinated."

right, thus explain most of it... kids are usually not symptomatic and so it might be spreading (or might not due to high level of protection from adults) but they don't seek testing

Yes that is a weakness but vaccinated adults means less chance of spread, though breakthrough cases do happen. But they happen more seldom than with the unvaccinated.

So there are fewer folks to give it to the kids and fewer people will get it from the kids.

Yep. That was the story from CBS News. Makes sense.

    Doesn't discount anything I posted.
