I don’t accept a buyout. Wall is completely tradeable after we get through this season. Patience is key.

No way. Wall has value and Stone will not just let him go for nothing. Waiving him and keeping his dead money is the worst thing that could happen.

Do you really want John Wall around and stunting the growth of our young players? What will it mean for John Wall to play this season, for him to be a starter and they put KPJ or Green on the bench. What is the point of that? Letting our young players grow together and not having a ego driven guard taking their playing time critical. We need them to learn from their mistakes, otherwise, we are setting them back a year. If Rockets can't trade Wall, they better figure out a way to buy him out. Who gives a **** about how much he will be worth as an asset next year. I sure as hell don't.

i keep thinking that if we can just find a way to cut his minutes back a little and get rid of some other vets to free up more playing time for youth, that his expiring contract could become a huge trade asset next year. We are so close; I say find a way to live with Wall for one more yr. but absolutely we have to get rid of some other vets.

This is crazy. Has it never dawned on you that Wall is a multiple all-star PG who might just be able to help our prospective future all star PG learn the craft considering he's only played the position for a year? Wall has a wealth of experience and knowledge he can pass on to our guards. It's like some of you have never watched basketball before last year (where he was coming off of an injury and playing for the first time in ages.) John Wall is not a bad player, he's just not worth what his contract pays. I'd rather pay for him to help develop our youth than pay for him to sit at home.

The point tis to develop the young guards and not just hand them starting spots. The team will be run the way Silas sees it and not a bunch of 18 year olds.

Silas is going to play players that will give the team the best chance to win and if Wall is a better starter than the youngins then Wall will start.

I'm all for benching or sending Wall home if he's dogging it in practice and games but if he's practicing hard then it's better to play him and showcase him for trades.

We have DJ Augustin to be the mentor. We saw how John Wall tried to play last year and it was incredibly selfish. I don't want that around to start training camp. You heard John, he considers himself the franchise player. He gave himself that label. I don't understand how anyone would want him around our team.

Nothing personal against, he sounds like a good guy and he helps the community, but he appears to be very selfish on the basketball court. I'm sure taking a backseat to the youngsters while he is in the prime of his career is not going to go well with him. I rather mitigate the problem then pretend that it will be fine.

I'm going to respectfully disagree. Dude is going to make $47 million in his last year, and according to all advanced metrics, he was a negative player on the floor last season. Why is a team going to go out of its way to acquire a $47 million contract for a player who isn't likely going to make their basketball team any better? On top of that, he's played 40 games in three years.

I know Clutch Fans generally overrates Rockets players, but for anyone who thinks John Wall is going to be a positive asset at any point in the remainder of this contract—that's some wishful thinking. He's an albatross. Even if you can find a taker for him in a year, the only thing you're likely to get back is other random contracts from mediocre players. No one is giving you a first round pick for John Wall. More than likely, it's going to require multiple firsts to dump him this year and might even require picks and assets to move a year from now.

Did you watch the Rockets all season long last year? Every game, or at least almost every game? I know I did and what I saw when John played is not what I want on this team. I don't think he will mentor the young guys. John is in his prime and I'm sure he wants to showcase himself rather than focusing on helping the young guys.

I know John is a basketball guy and he watches every single game he can get his hands on (high school, college, international). I know he actually appreciates the young guys as well. I actually have no doubt about that. My problem is that I know the guy has an ego, he has appointed himself the franchise player several times, and quite frankly I don't want him around our young guys. We don't need to stunt the growth of our young guys. We have DJ Augustin to help them learn the ropes of the NBA.

John has different goals than the Rockets currently do right now and human nature is to be selfish in situations like that. John showed his selfishness a whole lot last season and it was ugly.

See my post above, but I agree that Wall has value: negative value. Moving him will require giving up assets that hurts the rebuild. Who cares about the dead money? We're not paying it as fans, and the Rockets aren't going to be looking for any max players in free agency for a couple of years anyway. Whether he plays or not, you're still paying him anyway. If he plays, though, that's likely not going to help the development of the young guys who ought to be getting his minutes. If you buy him out, you get the added bonus of looking like you care about your players and their wishes.

Keeping him here is a lose-lose situation, IMO. Wall is going to grow unhappy. You're taking away minutes from younger players who are the future of the franchise. And you're likely hurting the long-term development and improvement of the team as a whole.

if John Wall will accept a buyout, u do it

Now we’re gonna act like last year’s extremely selfish play didn’t happen?

John Wall isn’t gonna rehab his value like CP3…best case scenario he does what Westbrook did, and we saw what Westbrook just fetched…Harrel, Kuz who is starting a 3/39 deal, KCP, and the 22nd pick in the draft

    big deal

I think Wall will be here for this year. That contract is too large to try and move right now and maybe it does us some good to hold on to it longer so it benefits us later on. I don't really see a issue with him being here another year as we transition to the younger guys. I think wall shot so much last year because we didn't have scorers on the floor most of the time due to injuries so he was trying to be a scorer (and prove something). With everyone healthy and new players added, we have scoring now so he can just be a facilitator and attack the rim (things he is good at). I don't think KPJ is really ready to be 'THE PG' yet. Another year of learning would be good for him.

John Wall was probably consumed with showing he still had it. As the team's only star "name" (and superstar salary), coupled with a rookie coach, we got what we got. Until we decided to shut everyone down with "injuries".

Just such a waste of salary cap at this point. Hopefully Tilman has learned not to publicly badmouth this contract/player.

There are truly no albatross contracts in the league - you can certainly trade one very large asset for another equally large asset or a number of equally gross contracts with smaller cap holds individually to suit other goals. Westbrook being the same inefficient scorer who doesn't play defense on his 3rd team since he signed his albatross contract is proof of that....but I agree generally that Wall won't be much of a positive asset as a player but in the right circumstance his contract could be valuable as an asset in it's last year to a team that thinks they need to free up cap room to make a run at a free agent in the class of 2023. Potential FAs that year include Lebron, Harden, Westbrook, Durant, Beal, Middleton, Irving, KP, Love, Wiggins, Embiid, Jokic, Russel, and a slew of other solid starters. I doubt Houston would be pursuing those guys but I don't think it's beyond the pail for at least some teams to see if they can get rid of multi-year deals in exchange for Wall if they are getting word that they might be on the wish list of those types of stars. We have seen teams do that in the past to ready themselves to make a run at a specific FA market.

I think the strategy for Houston needs to be - make Wall earn his keep by being a mentor and leader for the young core - teach them how to be effective pick and roll guys and floor generals. It's not value that will show in the box score immediately, but it potentially could in the future and meanwhile Wall is a serviceable player when healthy. Meanwhile next year you are shopping an expiring Wall to teams looking to make a run at 2023 FAs and see if you can pick up an asset or two in the process. Don't commit to too much long term money until you know what this team needs and be ready to pay our young core when they hit their first big deals.

You might be right but I don't see much harm in letting Wall start the season on the team vs a buyout. You can sit him down and explain to him that he can remain as the starter if he runs the offense and plays good defense. Tell him he has until the deadline to prove his value as a veteran starter that a contending team will want. If he buys in and plays well you can get out of his contract and possibly get an asset out of it. If he doesn't you can bench him and figure out a buyout. I'm not really all that worried about half a season with Wall hurting the future.

The only think I don't want to do is give up future draft capital to dump a bad contract. Only way I do that is if we are TITLE contenders and need the cap space. I also think the only FA's I'm really trying to pick up would be more mentor types or UDFA that has some potential. I don't want to build a playoff contender. Last year and next year is about developing young players, that play hard and try to win, but just aren't there yet. Definitely hope to get a top 2 pick next year and then hopefully have the talent on the team that could develop into title contenders that you can add key FA's to get us over the top.

I sure all as hell am worried about it. Why start off on the wrong foot when we can mitigate the situation. I guess Silas and Stone can talk to him, but is he really going to be happy about it? Is he going to buy in? This is an individual that is hungry to compete and absolutely believes he is the best player on the team. He knows this team is in development mode. I can't imagine him wanting to take a backseat. At least, seeing his attitude towards the end of the year. I'll never forget that Memphis game where he went ultra-selfish trying to be the unsung hero.

I think it's best to resolve this early on. It's not as if his salary is easy to move either. Try playing with the trade machine and trading his salary out, it is freaking hard.

You guys are stuck on squeezing out assets, but if we are trading John Wall, we are likely also taking bad contracts in order to make salaries work. Clippers for example, we will have to take Kennard's extra year (which I'm fine with, if we could work out a deal with the Clippers). The Sixers would only give us Tobias Harris, which carries two extra years, hell no. The Pelicans, there is an opportunity, but their damn organization is stubborn. The Wizards, why the hell would they take him back, plus they have Spencer now. The Knicks decided to blow their load on other players, so no opportunities there (plus Kemba is going over there, so likely a deal that won't happen this year). Which other team needs a point guard? I can't think of any others that want to pay John a large sum of money (I'm sure they will take him at the minimum once bought out).
