Not this again! Anyway, this game showed off how great he is. Able to stay with these All-Stars and great big men like Adebayo, Green, Tatum and then to actually be able to disrupt their play like he does. He's a monster. I see Ben Wallace potential.
Garuba is truly a great defensive player.. He just needs a shot and he'll be set as an elite role player in the NBA.
One of the best things about Garuba is how he will transform the team based on his impact in practice. I would love to get front row seats to the scrimmages watching he and Sengun go at it over and over. A defensive force verse and offensive savant. It's going to make them both so much better. Not to mention him draped all over Green during those sessions. It will force Jalen to add to his arsenal becoming even craftier. This signing will have positive long-term effects on the team not just during the games. Another hat tip to the Nwaba signing for these same reasons.
I love how he recovers, stays with the play, and how he has hops, compared to PJ. Same goes for Theis. Short of the huge centers with a massive size advantage, these guys can defend anyone quite well.
Yep just give him an HEB ad so he can pay off his buyout and call it a day. Honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Garuba is in some local commercials to ease the pain of his buyout. Rockets already have a plan. Stone seems so organized and confident so far in his dealings. Started with the pursuit of Wood last year, already had a deal inplace for Theiss this year. All draft targets seemed well thought out.
As Clutchfans reviewed potential predraft Rocket targets, I thought it was completely unrealistic to consider Garuba at #22. The only reason that could happen would be if GMs fell in love with unproven American players like Ziaire Williams. Consider that he went 12 draft slots before Garuba. Twelve. Based on what he did at Stanford, does anyone think Williams has the experience to be on the court or make a difference in a game of the magnitude of Spain vs. Team USA? To me, his game is so undeveloped that he's like that extra guy in a pick-up game that thinks he's the team star but he's actually just in the way. He's got so much learning and growing to do. Maybe the Pelicans, who want to make a playoff push, can bring Williams along, and in a couple of years, he can work his way from the practice courts on to a larger stage. The other tall forwards that teams scooped up before Garuba: Franz Wagner, Kai Jones, Jalen Johnson, and Isaiah Jackson. Sorry, this doesn't look like luck to me. It looks like incompetence. Are all these guys that much better than Garuba? Let's see where things land in a couple of years and which guys from this list become all-stars or starters. If they all pan out better than Garuba, this may go down as the deepest draft in NBA history, surpassing the 2003 class. Hey scouts, if you need any help identifying talent, there's a pretty good group over here at ClutchFans.
he has to come over...he and ALp need summer league and gleague to get acclimated to the game with English language barrier to overcome more so than the game itself.
I would guess he just needs to negotiate his buyout installments. It needs to extend beyond 4 years so he can pay some of it out of his second contract, maybe even get upfront money then to pay it off. I think it's wrong to to make a judgement by measured 'height', standing reach, wing span and vertical leap are actual basketball factors not where the top of your head is.
He is VERY strong, he has very good lateral movement and extremely long arms. He has the potential to be a true defensive stopper. He will be one of the better defenders in the league day one if he avoids foul trouble. His issue is on the offensive end, he isn't very good there. He needs to become a solid three point shooter and finish in transition and he will make himself a lot of money..... he slipped because teams got greedy and did not want to take a guy that will be a role player (all be it a potentially very good one) in the top 20 of the draft.
Does he? That's amazing. I assumed he didn't and have never watched an interview. Still though, ALp needs it and Garuba and he are friends so letting them come up together on/off the court would be beneficial for both imo
Not only that, but a role player who can't shoot! Not really anyone's first priority in the lottery. I'm not sure the Rockets even take him at 23 if they hadn't already selected TWO picks earlier in the same round.
His initial offense will be in PnR plays. Give it to him and let him go try and dunk everything haha We need his energy, defense and rebounding on the court. Offense will be developed over time.
Out of curiosity, I looked at Thybulle's draft class as a comparison -- he was picked 20th overall (class with Zion, Ja, etc.). They're 2 years in, and Thybulle ranks 7th in overall win share, 9th in WS/48, 3rd in BPM, and 3rd in VORP. All while ranking 24th in points. 29th in rebounds, and 20th in assists. He may not sustain that positioning, but it gives an idea of relative impact that an elite defensive player can have -- both early on, and relative to his peers (and draft position).
He is going to have to work on his hands and handle as well. I really like the pick and think his game will translate well. Hopefully he’s a gym rat and can work with Lucas and the teams trainers to improve on his deficiencies. One other thing I noticed is he’s really not much of a leaper. He gets by with his long wingspan. I’m wondering if it’s just a European thing and not so much of a physical thing.
