Texas has 50% more people, though. On a per-capita basis, Texas has had about 95% of the cases, 66% of the deaths, and 33% of the tests compared to NY. California has more deaths than either TX or NY for the same reason, despite doing better than both per-capita.
And one of the densest cities on earth... with a teaming subway system... but yeah, let's keep comparing all these things.
Absolutely - and NY has done a great job after those first months. As bobrek said, there is also population density differences, etc. It's just a hard comparison to make. I'm not trying to say Texas did a better job than NY - it's just that these kinds of stats are meaningless.

Okay, I just walked through my neighborhood. There's this old man (80 years), neighbor, who's fairly fit, always working outside on his lawn, keeps active. We've always exchanged pleasantries. I know politically where an old white Texan male will stand so we don't go there. Until today. He was sitting out front with his neighbor. 25 minutes of friendly conversation, generally, you know, but the old man only just got his first vaccine shot and the other guy, mid-50's maybe, a little older than me, nice guy but very defensive and all the excuses that he had learned from Tucker Carlson about blaming the unvaccinated "because the media doesn't talk about them spreading Covid" (they do talk about it, but whatever). I never even blamed him (aloud) for not getting the shot; he just started getting defensive. Why not just go get the shot and skip all this talk? It'd be quicker. So the old man now talks about how he detests all Democrats, to a man, because he hates socialism and blah blah blah. The people who attacked the capitol on January 6th are patriots and he loves Greg Abbott and if it were up to him (the old man) he'd invite Putin over here to help Abbott so Texas can secede from the United States. Not making this up. I didn't have it in me to tell him Russia is a socialist country (and I'm the socialist?) and people who advocate for overthrow of an American government are traitors, not heroes. (Well, I do have a brown-skinned wife and African-American friends so I guess I'm socialist in his eyes.) He said to the neighbor sitting with him, "I know you and have known you a while," adding to me, "I don't know you and don't care to know you, hee hee." "Well, that's harsh, but now we agree on something, it's been fun." In other words, we could talk until he knew I didn't agree with him. And I know this guy is far from alone in his belief system. So, there is a mindset in this country that is just nucking futs.
I don't know about y'all but in talking to my nursing sauces in the greater Houston area, the nursing shortage is a huge problem. Nursing schools aren't built to take in large numbers of students and hospitals don't like to have greater than X% of newbie nurses (I think it has to do with either Medicare reimbursement or some regulation). It's a real problem. I have heard of many nurses getting burned out and quitting due to the pandemic. And we were already set to have far more nurses retire than join the workforce. I would do it but body excretions make me vomit; I have a weak stomach brehs.
