What’s the plan supposed to be with Al P (as Stone calls him) since he can’t speak any English and needs a translator? How does this work for teammates communicating with him on the court? I’m sure this is more common than I’m thinking but I don’t know if we’ve seen this before in Houston. Will he not play until he picks up a solid fundamental learning of the English language?
Yao didn't know English when he was drafted either.... I'm sure he'll pick up enough to play, how many words of English would you even need to know?
LOL — how do you not know that? We only had the most famous non-English speaking player in NBA history, possibly American sports history. It will be a challenge, I think. Hopefully he can pick up the language quickly.
He speaks the language of basketball. Sounds like he might need his personal translator courtside all year.
I don't think it will be a big problem during the game. There were also foreign teammates in the team he played in Turkey. But he will definitely have some adaptation problems until he gets used to the team and makes friends. This may affect his game for a while. But he will fix it. At least he won't be too lonely cause he said, he is a friend of Garuba and is in constant communication with him. It's impossible to live in the US for more than 6 months and not speak English. Most likely, after 6-7 months, he will have a level of English at which he can communicate comfortably. For an example myself, when I was in college I made it pretty far when even I came US for a work and travel program during three months.

It will be quite the distraction for the players on the court if Al P's translator has to be part of the huddle. I'm intrigued.
He didn't. He had to have Colin Pine translate the first couple years he was here. He learned very quickly though.
