I can understand the argument for taking Cade or Green over Mobley but Suggs over Mobley? I don't know about that one....

If Mobley played anything like Dirk or Duncan you definitely draft him. Problem is he does nothing similar. Two of the best low post scorers in the game vs a guy with 0 post moves. You are comparing him to two all time greats two top-20 players of all time.

That’s not my intent, I’m not comparing him to either. Just the fact that there are bigs that have lead their teams to rings recently.

You don’t draft for position, you take best available. I don’t care if it’s a big man or a guard. If Rockets brass thinks Mobley is the best available player with the highest potential, then they should draft him regardless of position.

No matter whether we draft a big or a guard, we aren’t championship caliber any time soon. We will need to add more talent going forward and it’s clear that you need inside and outside presence to win it all. Add the best piece available and look for the missing piece later. We’re too bad to be picky about position.

Causation or coincidence? The hidden message is that the championships didn't arrive until the bigs got there. Is the idea that bigs take so much longer to be impactful that that time might be in their second stop?

This thread seems to have been started by someone who wasn't alive/old enough to watch basketball during the 90's/early 2000's.

True - but let's not overlook the potential we have already in a big guard (KPJ). He has at least as much potential as Green/ Suggs.
Maturity issues have seen him play just 76 games in 2 years - but with a 50 point game already to his credit, it is not a reach to suggest he has already proven he has all the talent.
I have high hopes for him this season!

Best player available for me. Can't wait for the draft!!

We are drafting TODAY, not in the 90s.

If true, why would you want the worst defensive guard duo in the league?

You can't teach length. Skilled big man is hard to come by. Mobley shows flashes but he is still raw. Harder to develop big man. It is still safer to pick a guard.

Yeah - that's the point the OP missed - that bigs generally have a longer ramp up to "dominance". There are exceptions of course(Shaq for one), but I don't think ANYONE is under the assumption that the guys at the top of this draft are generational talents like Shaq was.

Dirk played nothing like Dirk when he got drafted. He developed and was a project. He was also a defensive liability his entire career.

Mobley is his own guy. He handles better than both. Is at least as good a passed as Duncan and just as good a defender. Probably a better defender than Tim in space.

People need to stop looking at Mobley like Shaq/Barkley do and see him as more of a Bosh/Duncan hybrid. He plays like a wing, not like a center.

I trust Mobley to develop an elite offensive game more than I trust Green to develop elite defensive and playmaking instincts.

    My general thoughts are

Bigs careers seem to be shorter than smalls

I like being able to put the ball in a pure scorer's hand at the end of games and in situations where defenses have you figured out. An isolation possession is valuable.

There are a load of good bigs in the two drafts.

So if I were torn between Mobley and Green, i would take Green.

Shaq and Kobe arrived the same summer. I don’t know what the OP is talking about.

Shaq arrived as a young megastar, Kobe as a raw high school prospect. Kobe was a lottery ticket. Shaq was gold.
