Completely forgot that this was happening. Well, the Astros don't make their first pick until Monday anyways. They would've had the #16 pick. The Astros will have $2,940,600 to spend on their first nine picks. Here are the slot values, which have not changed since 2019. Round 3, Pick 87: $689,300 Round 4, Pick 117: $492,700 Round 4, Pick 132: $426,600 - compensation pick from Blue Jays for signing George Springer Round 5, Pick 148: $364,400 Round 6, Pick 178: $277,100 Round 7, Pick 208: $216,600 Round 8, Pick 238: $174,000 Round 9, Pick 268: $154,600 Round 10, Pick 298: $145,300
From what I heard, yes. Pains where we would have had the pick, F Manfred. Should still see some solid talent fall to Rd 3/4.
Very top is probably average, but I think the 3-10 rounds will be deep. Lots of college talent who would have been gone had there been a full 40 rounds last yearz
I'd like Niko Kavadas, the slugging 1B from ND. Was eligible last year but didn't get drafted due to the shortened draft. That (a bit older), and the fact that he's 1B-only should allow him to fall to us. Can be Gurriel's heir apparent and his age will mean he probably reaches the majors sooner.
Draft is such a crap shoot that unless you are taking someone in the 1st round, most MLB fans have no earthly idea who got drafted! Besides that it’s some player that had gaudy stats in College or High school, but we may not hear about them for a few years if ever again. Nevertheless it’s a great assessment of how good a scouting team is that replenishes a minor league talent with valuable depth and potentially valuable prospects.
This, with baseball it is hard to know for sure and COVID also makes it more difficult.... but my feeling is that it is an average draft at the top. There are maybe 10 players that have the chance to be stars if everything breaks their way, which is never going to happen. Also agree with you that later in the draft you can likely find some sleepers because a lot of these kids lost a year or play and development. Hopefully that benefits the Astros.
Depends on next CBA, but with number of minor league teams shrinking, I would expect draft will shrink as well.
The first member of the Houston Astros' draft class of 2021 is... Round 3, Pick 87: Tyler Whitaker, OF, Bishop Gorman High School, Las Vegas Won't be updating since I'm at work
Whitaker seems like a Kyle Tucker type. Tall and skinny, hits for power, strong arm, projects to be a corner outfielder.
