In other news: The Mets scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th to beat the Cardinals 5-4 Go Stros!!!!
Thanks for the heads-up, Codell. BobFinn*: Were you talking NL only? Here's the now-complete list I found: Lee Richmond, Worchester vs. Cleveland, 1880 Monte Ward, Providence vs. Boston, 1880 Cy Young, Boston vs. Philadelphia, 1904 Addie Joss, Cleveland vs. Chicago, 1908 Charlie Robertson, Chicago vs. Detroit, 1922 Don Larsen, New York vs. Brooklyn, 1956 [WS, of course -- k14] Jim Bunning, Philadelphia vs. New York, 1964 Sandy Koufax, Los Angeles vs. Chicago, 1965 Catfish Hunter, Oakland vs. Minnesota, 1968 Len Barker, Cleveland vs. Toronto, 1981 Mike Witt, California vs. Texas, 1984 Tom Browning, Cinncinati. vs Los Angeles,1988 Dennis Martinez, Montreal vs. Los Angeles, 1991 Kenny Rogers, Texas vs. California, 1994 David Wells, New York vs. Minnesota, 1998 David Cone, New York vs. Montreal, 1999 Randy Johnson, Arizona vs. Atlanta, 2004 General question: If it had been 0-0 in the top of the 9th with runners on 1st and 3rd, no outs, and Johnson at bat, would you have pinch-hit for him?
What is amazing is that all of the recent perfect games have all been in the AL (including Mussina's one-strike away perfect game)... That is truly an interesting statistical oddity... Congrats RJ... maybe Drayton should have broken the bank for him.
Impressive as Rando may have been tonight. Making his first start since his son, Trevor, was born. Wake, decided to one up any and all performances with a complete domination of earthly existence. 7 innings 3 hits 1 earned and a big W.
No way. Especially not someone like Johnson. He would have killed the manager. Maybe Bob Finn can think of someone, but I've never seen a pitcher pulled (except for injury) when he had a no no going.
That was a list the Arizona broadcast had on the screen. No idea why they only had 4 names listed There have now been 17 Perfect games thrown in Major League Baseball history!!!
I think those were all lefthanders??? EDIT: No ...that can't be right cause Browning was a left hander too.
Almost and sort of perfect games On June 23, 1917, Babe Ruth walked the first batter in a game against the Washington Senators. Ruth was so enraged with the calls made by umpire Brick Owens, that Ruth punched Owens in the face and was ejected. Ernie Shore came in to replace Ruth. The runner on first was caught stealing, and Shore proceeded to retire the next 26 batters. All 27 outs were made while Shore was on the mound. On May 26, 1959, Harvey Haddix of the Pittsburgh Pirates carried a perfect game through an amazing twelve innings against the Milwaukee Braves only to have it broken up with an error in the 13th inning. On June 3, 1995, Pedro Martinez of the Montreal Expos had a had a perfect game through nine innings against the San Diego Padres. In the 10th inning, he gave up a leadoff double to Bip Roberts. Four other "perfect games" are unofficial because the games ended before nine innings were completed.
Somebody check Pedro Martinez's outing way back when he was with the Expos. He threw 9 perfect innings, but it was a 0-0 game. EDIT: n/m, I did it myself. Here's the link: Pedro's "near" perfect game Pedro Martinez became the second major league pitcher to take a perfect game into extra innings and the first to throw nine hitless innings at Jack Murphy Stadium. Martinez, who is a throw-back pitcher to an era long gone, hurled this amazing game yet only earned a simple win upon its completion due to a tench inning Bip Roberts line drive double down the right-field line.
I hate to demean the Big Unit's accomplishment folks, but the Braves suck! I could get a win on the hill against that patchwork bunch of scrubs in their lineup. And I haven't pitched since.....1986! I was at the Braves/Astros game last Sunday. Any guys in attendance? I was sitting above the Braves dugout and it will likely be the last time I pay ungodly money to sit in the sun and watch such awful baseball. God, I wish some billionare would buy the Braves and buy us some players!
Now see, this just brings tears of joy to my eyes. The only thing better than watching Randy Johnson throw a perfect game is that it happened against the Braves. Let this be a lesson to you, when you replace one of the best 3 man pitching combos in history with Russ Ortiz, John Thomson and Mike Hampton, and you let Gary Sheffield and Javy Lopez walk for nothing, you will lose many games.
how could a fan of the braves get mad that they are not doing anything this year. give someone else a chance geez. thats the biggest reason i dont like baseball that much. if the pirates, expos, and tigers ever made the playoffs maybe i would start liking it more.
