Luby's is saved baby! Around 32 locations in Texas. Not sure how many are saved in the Houston area. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/bu...210621&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email For those that don't have The Chronic subscription:
As we were discussing Father's Day plans for Saturday (celebrating early with all Fathers) someone suggested, or maybe just brought up, Luby's into the convo... I remember them having amazing jell-o when I was a kid cause that's basically the only place we ate at when my mom worked at Sharpstown mall for a while. Needless to say, Luby's was shot down and scoffed at almost immediately after joining the conversation. My mom still loves that place more than her own children. Good times.
When i think of Lubys, the first thing i think of is going to lunch with my grandmother and grandfather, so seems like a pretty natural nostalga fit to me. I have a soft spot in my heart for green beans that have been marinated in salt and slowly simmerred for like 6 hours until they are basically mush. Also fried fish square with a mountain of mashed potatoes drenched in white gravy. Maybe not haute cusine, but not trash. The food was comforting and reliabley consistent, if anachronistic, until they ran off the rails. i think some of the locations must have gone to pot far faster than other locations.
Lies. I just had Luby's yesterday for lunch, and ate the leftovers for dinner. It's still damn good, I don't care what anyone says.
I'm with you...i like it too. For sure a lot of it is nostalgia for me. I'm glad it's sticking around.
Yeah, I don't go much anymore. Maybe once every few months, but man did the family and I go there a ton as a kid from the mid 90s to practically 2008 when my dad passed away. A lot of fond memories. RIP to the one off W. Tidwell and 290.
I'm down with Lubys. Loved the chicken fried steak...no matter how many days it had been sitting in that tin pan. Loved the green beans...that had been soaked in butter, bacon grease and unicorn breast milk. Perfection!
I may have to give it another chance, the last time it sucked but maybe it was an off day. It is nostalgic for sure
I'm down for a square fried fish, masked potatoes and fried okra when it was good. Admittedly last couple times I went (a few years back) the quality was shite.
