The shooting happened Monday afternoon at the Big Bear grocery store along Candler Road, across the street from South DeKalb Mall. According told Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernades, that the incident started when a man walked into the store and refused to put on a mask. “I have a friend who works in this store and I think it was her who got shot and it’s just really sad,” witness Marquisha White said. “I don’t know what the world is coming to -- period.” A witness told investigators that the cashier told the man to put on a mask and that’s when the chaos unfolded. DeKalb County Sheriff Melody Maddox told Fernandes that investigators are working on a timeline of events, but it appeared that the man who refused to put on the mask shot first.
