Does he need to shoot the ball in the end of show too? Wish he could pass 18pts (That is Francis's score).
For those who missed it, he was asked about the Lakers and Spurs game 5 scenario. Says its a sham the Lakers won it because he can't comprehend how you can take a step turn around and shoot the ball in .4 of a second, but in .3 all you can do is tip. Says he doesn't understand the criticism of Kobe being selfish, and that he's a competitor and brings it every night. Then they did a gone fishing picture of Yao, JVG, and Kenny holding up a sailfish which was pretty funny.
did you hear Charles Barkley say, "the better looking brothers team" when talking about the Miami Heat, that was crazy.
Heres who's annoying, dudes like you who are infatuated with hating a coach because of the way he looks. you, edc, roc paint, and thefreak should have a party - get together for annoyed people and just go ahead and make a pact with eachother claiming you will be forever annoyed by JVG and will never waste an opportunity to let everybody else know who doesnt give a **** that you don't like JVG.
Ditto. It's too bad he said it, but someone was going to do it sooner or later. Give the guy a break. He made Francis try his best on defense - that alone is worth the money he's getting.
For the record, I don't give a damn how JVG looks. What I care about is his skills as as NBA basketball coach, and those have yet to be proven.
In the East? Yep. JVG was ostensibly brought to the Rockets to "win and win now." That did not happen. The record and style of play the entire season just confirmed my opinion that he is an average NBA head coach, and at his best a tier below the winners in the league. Incidentally, keeping with the topic of this thread, I found JVG's skills as an analyst better than his skills as a head coach. True, he has a "face made for radio," but if you could get past that, he could say some insightful and interesting things.
An average coach can get 45 wins. The question is one of maximizing the talent, and that is where Van Gundy must be graded as "below average." Yao Ming's improvement from year one to year two should've been worth more than two games. Period. Take into account that Steve Francis' prior healthy season (while Yao Ming was still toiling away in China) generated THE EXACT SAME NUMBER OF WINS (45). Also, backing into the playoffs with one of the worst records in the league down the stretch is hardly something for an organization to hang their hat on. This argument is pointless, and can be found in countless other threads. I do feel compelled to point out that lest someone complain about "going off," I did not start the "JVG v. 2002/3" portion of this discussion. All I wanted to do was clarify the accusation that "I'm always hating on Van Gundy for how he looks."
How many above average NBA coaches do we have in the NBA this season? Is Jerry Sloan below average? Or are being an average coach and maximizing your talent mutually exclusive? In which case your 45 wins = average coach comment means nothing. Which is it?
that's ridiculous. so you expected him to win it all now? that says a lot about your respect for his coaching skills then. red aurbach as head coach and jesus christ as assistant coach wouldn't have gotten the rockets to beat the lakers this year.
take a look at the teams above us in the standings in the West. and now recall the last time you saw teams as loaded as they are this year. thank you.
edc, You say JVG wa sbrought here to "win and win now". I would like you to define those terms, and I want you to show me where you got that from. It's my understanding that we won pretty much the same # of games last year. So now with a new coach bringing in a whole new system (its called discipline), we should get the same # of wins? I think we got 2 more wins btw, but regardless of that, even 43 wins and 8th seed would've been perfectly fine. Remember that Hubie Brown was .500 in his first season, then won 50 games in his second season. I sincerely find it hard to believe you expected this team to be better than the Mavs, Lakers, Spurs, Wolves or Kings. Yes, I know you're going to pull the "Memphis isn't betetr than us" card, but that's a product of two things: 1) They are not as good as the average 50 win team. We saw that in the playoffs. They overachieved, everyone knows it. 2) They finally had the system down because their coach got some core players that he likes, got rid of some that he didn't, and was able to fully get his system working in his second season as head coach. As yipengzhao put it, Red Auerbach and Jesus wouldn't have gotten us past the first round or significantly better than 45 wins.
1. I take offense to this comment. If you think I dislike Van Gundy because of his looks, than your an idiot. 2. For the record, I think JVG is a fine coach and brings alot to the game of basketball. I just don't like the fit. 3. Kiss my ***
