I've been to Las Vegas several times in the last couple of years...always the short way, the 2 hour 48 minute flight.

My brother in law is suggesting the grueling drive from Houston to Las Vegas (his wife hates to fly, plus it saves money for 4 people on air fare).

Has anybody made this trip before? Is it a good road trip route? Should my wife and I just fly and meet them there? :)

man, i know a few co-workers that went to Defcon in Vegas back in 2002 and they said it was greuling and went by plane last year and these are some young guys, early 20s that switched drivers between like 8 people.

    Ok! Here it is.

    Houston to SA is ok
SA to about 150 west is really nice
The rest of Texas is boring
    New Mexico is boring
It is going to be hot.

It took us about 30 hours to get to Houston from San Francisco. It was fun but that was a guys road trip. I figure you will have at least a 24 hour drive.

Yeah, it's a great road trip. Once you get out of Texas, it doesn't take long to get to Vegas. Beautiful trip if you're a fan of deserts. I really enjoy driving around the Southwest.

    Afraid of flying?

One of the great experieces of Vegas, in my opinion, is stepping off the plane and hearing the coins falling into the slots. Everything changes when you step off the plane.

Let them drive and meet them there. You will be well rested and they will probably only want to relax after the drive.

I guess the real question is do you want a DRIVING vacation or a VEGAS vacation?

With today's gasoline prices, flying probably won't cost more than driving...who knows, you might be able to get a deal where it's actually cheaper!

great to see a Vegas topic. My flight will be touching down at McCarran Int'l Airport in about 8 hours. Have the alarm clock set to go off in about 2 hours, can't go to freaking sleep. I'm afraid that I'll sleep through the two alarms I have set and will miss my flight.

I can't wait to be in Viva Las Vegas!!! Luckily I had a free airline ticket on American Airlines. I'm only 20, so I can't gamble. Or can I? Has anyone here tried to gamble while being underage in Vegas? I bet it is the hardest place in the world to try to do something while being underage.

Just to keep this on topic, I'd say the drive would be f'n boring. The drive across West Texas and New Mexico is nothing but flat flat flat. Throw in a few cacti here and there.

If you do drive it might be a little faster taking I-10 straight to Blythe,AZ then straight north on 95 to Las Vegas. That way you can bypass the damn dam (there are only two lanes and it's usually busy). Try to avoid 93 from Phoenix to Kingman, it's also two lanes and can be dangerous depending on the drivers.
I-17 from Phoenix to Flagstaff is a beautiful drive if you love steep grades but it can be time consuming.
If you drive straight through it should take about 25-30 hrs.
gas here in Vegas is now running at 2.23 a gallon so be prepared to fill it up quite often.

    Good Luck and Have Fun

If you do have a youthful face be prepared to get carded a lot.
Letting minors gamble is a big no no and can get the casino into big trouble if gaming finds out.
The Hilton was find 250,000 grand once because their line to the star trek experience(which kids were allowed to enter) ran next to the machines.
It's not impossible but you will get hassled if caught.

For those coming to Vegas wether to gamble or visit, I would highly recommend going to the top of the Stratosphere at night. The view is awesome and they have 3 thrill rides that are pretty cool.

    Good Luck

If you can't afford to fly to Vegas why would you go?

If they are afraid to fly, send to the doctor for a Xanax.

Driving to Vegas would be a brutal waste of time.
Maybe, maybe if you plan on seeing Carlsbad Caverns, Ruidosa, The Grand Canyon and Lake Mead, but even so , rent a car and fly back.

Life is too short to waste on West Texas.

I'm going to Vegas from May 20- June 1 to participate in the World Series of Poker festivities. I'll try to win a $10,000 seat to the big tournament via a satellite by playing online, and maybe a few others while I'm there, but I haven't had much luck so far. :)

Here's how I'd rate the clubs in Vegas:

    1. Rain @ The Palms
    2. Baby's @ Hard Rock
    3. Light @ Bellagio
    4. Bikini's @ Rio
    5. Studio 54 @ MGM

I hear good things about RumJungle @ Mandalay, and Drais @ Barbary Coast (after hours), but I've never had a chance to check it out. Also, if you have a chance, I highly recommend checking out Ghost Bar @ The Palms. The view's absolutely amazing there, as you get a clear view of the entire strip, and can see for miles.

I can afford to fly...in fact, my wife and I might fly and just meet them there...but my sis in law is absolutely terrified of flying...makes her sick to her stomach.

By the way, got a good promotion in the mail from Bellagio.

    Go to www.bellagio/D139M

Deluxe room at $139 a night with a free upgrade to a lake view (normally $209 during summer)

This is Sunday - Thursday almost all summer.

Pretty good deal if you go during the weekdays to Vegas.

If you make a stop at the Grand Canyon, then it ain't so bad.

Mapquest it and drive at night. You'll be suprised at your gas mileage.

I did the road trip last summer with some friends. Quite fun.

I'd love to make that drive. If RM95's Girl could get more time off in July when we're going, I'd definitely drive it.

    so would I

when we first planned the Smeggy World Tour.... we were going to drive from LA to Vegas... then after a few days onto Grand Canyon and then eventually onto Houston... it would have been great but we just didn't have that much time this time
