That would be me. Never heard of 'em before until today. But some bug comes up from underneath the ground every 17 years just to pump the female bug. Then they go back into the ground. It's pretty damn weird. But yeah. They are everywhere! And they are louder than a motorcycle! But I guess after 17 years of celebacy I'd do that too. I dunno. But this is kind of freaky.

Count me in they were all over the sidewalk this morning. Supposed to get a lot worse. However, they aren't quite as big as the ones back home in Houston. And their black with red eyes. I think the cicada sound in the trees is peaceful.

They fly around, mate, lay eggs, then die, don't go back underground. Apparently the smell of decaying bugs is pretty rank for a couple of days. Thankfully we don't deal with this swarm here.

Haven't seen as many cicadas in Houston the past few years as opposed to when I was a kid. I have no idea why.

Proactive measures would have taken care of this problem....

I don't live in Houston anymore but they were all over the place when I was a kid, as well. They leave those exoskeletons (shells) strapped to the pines.

They are not locusts. Locusts look like very large grasshoppers. Cicadas are commonly mislabeled as such.

I'm going to try and get footage of a Cicada fighting a squirrel. I may have to coax them into it tho'. Not sure. But it will look natural.

    They're <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brood_X">Brood X</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicada">Cicadas</a>. The <a href="http://www.cincinnati.com/freetime/cicadas/">Cincinnati Enquirer has a great page on them</a>.

    cicada

\Ci*ca"da\ (s[i^]*k[=a]"d[.a]), n.; pl. E. Cicadas (-d[.a]z), L. Cicad[ae] (-d[=e]). [L.] (Zo["o]l.) Any species of the genus Cicada. They are large hemipterous insects, with nearly transparent wings. The male makes a shrill sound by peculiar organs in the under side of the abdomen, consisting of a pair of stretched membranes, acted upon by powerful muscles. A noted American species (C. septendecim) is called the seventeen year locust.

I used to hate that sound in Houston. The song of the cicadas used to be my summer alarm clock. Their exoskeletons made great battles with my action figures. I haven't lived in Houston for 12 years, so I actually miss that sound every morning. I can still hear it in my head every now and then if it's exceptionally hot and humid outside. I have to take a moment to realize that it is my imagination.

My front yard back home is full of those. I've seen much bigger than that one, my dad calls them C-130's. He used to be in the airforce.

No you dumbass. June bugs are small beetles; nowhere even close to a cicada.

    Sorry.
