Me and my girlfriend finally arrived in Houston yesterday and it was one of the worst flights I have ever been on, due to the weather, and unfortunately it was my girlfriend's first flight ever. Through a delay, some very, very bad turbulence, and having to fly around in circles in the sky (the pilot called them holding patterns over the PA system) we arrived around 4:30 yesterday. We went to Baybrook Mall and ate at a place called Babin's over in Kemah but now it's back to the airport because we're flying south to Brownsville/South Padre Island but the weather doesn't look promising again and we even got a hotel room right on the beach. We may even go over in Mexico sometime while we are down there since it is so close. Any tips or suggestions for the Brownsville/South Padre Island area? Mexico?
Yeah, if you don't have to go into Mexico don't. Its a dirty hell hole where 19 year olds go to drink and hook up.
I don't like flying. I usually have to have a drink before I get on a plane just to relax. I always feel stupid for being nervous when there's a 10 year old kid across the isle who isn't nervous at all.
I used to have a mild fear of flying. But I talked to a pilot once (I dated his daughter). He explained a lot of things to me that eased my tensions. The most important thing is that those planes are SO STRONG up there and can take quite a beating. Turbulence is just a natural part of airflow that occurs all the time, and those planes are designed with that in mind. So while you and I are sitting there sweating about the bumps, the pilot and crew are as calm as they can be. They know the plane can handle it. Over the mountains the air swirls upward off the peaks and can really bounce a plane around even at very high altitudes. There have been a few flights that I was truly scared on though. One was flying into Salt Lake City. The genius flight attendand stated on the PA (before we took off) that, "We have been informed that we will be experiencing moderate to EXTREME turbulence on the descent into Salt Lake." So everyone was freaked out before we even took off. This was the worst!! The plane was not only shaking, bouncing up and down, dropping hundreds of feet at a time, but it was also fish-tailing. This flight had people with their rosaries out. It was bad. But you know what, the whole time, that plane (Delta flight, 767) was adjusting constantly, and we made it in just fine.
I would say, if you're going to Mexico, don't stay near the border. Go to Monterrey or Tampico or further south if you can. As for South Texas, I have no clue. Ask Falcon's Talon.
That's like myself. Not because i'm nervous; I just like drinking on planes. Something about the altitude, I guess. A cup of coffee is good to have on a plane, for some reason, as well.
The weather down here has been sucking all week!!! Last night we had severe thunderstorms and flash flood/tornado warnings. Today doesn't look so bad. Definitely hit the island. If you go across, go to Garcia's. It's a pretty neat tourist friendly place and has a great restaurant as well. On the US side, Bigo's is a great Mexican Steakhouse (go to the one on Paredes Line Road) and just up the road a bit is Antonio's, a pretty good Mexican Restaurant. Tell me what you're looking for and I'll give some tips. Maybe we can get together and have some drinks tonight. How long will you be down ?
Sorry aboiut getting back WAY TOO late Falcons, we just walked across the bridge and visited some side shops as well as Garcia's. I didn't know that prescriptions were not needed down there, WOW! I didn't get anything though but my aunt loaded up. The poverty down there got to my girlfriend but it was an OK place. South Padre Island was great and I was glad I got to go, hope to visit next year during Sprinbg Break. We arrived back here, in Houston, tonight around 9:00 PM and went and ate. We'll be here until Tuesday...now where is Treasures?
I love to fly. My father was a pilot in the AF and I have been flying (for real and in sims) for most of my life. I love it at the moment that the back wheels leave the ground. The vibrations from the runway end and everything gets smaller. Awesome.
I meant to ask this as well, what are some drugs you can buy in Mexico at one of the pharmacies and bring back without any problem and what are some you cannot?
Speaking of making it, I landed in Saudi Arabia about an hour ago. Funny how the first thing I do after eating is come to a pc and check out this site. I admit it, I am an addict. Well, should be racking in the cash this summer. i start tomorow, which sucks since I am pretty tired and giong to be jetlagged. anyways, just thought I would leave my "I made it" here. What's kind of wierd, while I was in Amsterdam some lady like almost twice my age starting hitting on my in the airport and asked me to go out in the city with her. I was like.....uhhhhh no thanks.
Congrats on making it Uprising and good luck. I am still waiting to travel to a different time zone and experience jetlag, I've always been in CDT.
Thanks. Jetlagg isn't really anything to look forward to. It just messes with you head. I haven't been to Mexico, though I am most likely going to be down there way south later this summer to stay at some resort. I can't think of the name right now. Where did you fly in from?
