Blue bell has become more of a flavor/texture combo lab, than the standard for quality ice cream. Their line of holiday cake ice creams are pretty amazing. Pecan Pralines & cream is my current favorite.

Which one did you get? I’ve been contemplating getting one for the wife and kids.

Blue Bell is the best quality (when not poisonous) of the big brands that are sold everywhere.

But, anywhere has countless local ice creams you can buy at the grocery that are better than any of the mass produced stuff.

I also wont buy blue bell because they are a shitty company

Homemade Vanilla is the only vanilla to buy if you're from Texas and are using it to top off homemade desserts, ala cobbler, pie, brownie, etc.... Makes good milkshakes too. Is some of this nostalgia? Sure. It's also the closest I've found to how the old-school homemade ice cream tasted (with the rock salt and fresh cream and real sugar and electric motor and all out on the porch when I was a kid...)

Other than that, Blue Bell is questionable at best. I have not been impressed with their other flavors in a long time, there's just better stuff out there. Frankly, there were a couple of flavors of HEB that were better than most all BB did. Or so said my granny, who was an ice cream afficionado, and I agreed.

If I'm in an ice cream mood and don't feel like driving to Amy's I normally get Teo's gelato from HEB which is out of Austin. Caramel Cookies and Cream for the win.

Turkey Hill is allegedly legit. Haven't had it, so I've been told.

Haven't tried that one yet either, nice.

This. I'll stick with HEB all day.

HEB 1905 Vanilla is better and less likely to kill you.

Has anyone figured out what the heck happened to tin roof. It’s obviously my favorite, and I miss it tremendously

I gotta try that, but really it's not more or less likely to kill you at all, no more than anything else shelf stable you buy in a store.

If you were to rate *only* BB “Homemade Vanilla” to other vanillas, is it still marginal at best?

I only know my chocolates, and agree BB’s Dutch Chocolate is marginal at best. So I couldnt rank the vanilla, but consider the vanilla their best.

they discontinued it a year or so ago. I don't know why but assume it was not selling as well as it once did. Maybe they will bring it back one day. maybe as a season flavor

I was at the local HEB the other day and saw something in the ice cream section I hadn't seen in at least a couple of years, likely much longer. A box of those tasty little Bluebell ice cream sandwiches. They're made with Homemade Vanilla and addictive. Buyer beware.

As for real homemade vanilla, when I was growing up my father made ice cream once in a while. My sister and I would take turns turning the crank, trying not to drool. When peaches were in season, Dad would ask my mother to pick up some fresh ones and she'd chop them up into chunks and he'd toss them in there when the time seemed right. I can still taste that peach ice cream.

Haagen Daz is the best big brand these days. Uses real sugar.
