Yea the economics isn't really emphasized enough. To Jail someone we pay 30-80k, most offenders are non violent. So here may not be a threat to others, we take away their tax dollars earned, we take away their community support if they have children or any immediate family and alter their income potential or direction of life just as if you're closest relative be it a child, sibling, or parent or any guiding force being incarcerated for something akin to having a drink.

Then once in the prison system to survive often you need to be involved with gangs, basically it has an affect of future crime being more likely even if you weren't violent to begin with. So when you get out, that becomes more of a track too. All in all we pay a significant cost for this on oppose to at least if educational vehicles or self betterment vehicles were invested in, that invests in safety for everyone, less crime, more prosperity and hope in that regard.

Yet we give ridiculous subsidies for corn and soy to prop up, same free market screaming guys like rand paul won't stay away from those. Or how we take public money, give for example in this case billiions to israel only to have them buy arms from us which goes back into private arms companies so whose the winner here...? taxpayers? Or the last tax cuts where you could write off an entire private jet(looking at you tilman;) whose that helping. Problem is all the entrenched powers allow companies to write in amendments, bills, and earmarks but people are still arguing and pointing fingers about 'what about' the otherside as if the goal isn't policy itself but which team does less harm...

Yep, people are overlooking inflation. Gone are the days when someone who wanted to improve their chances could take on a job and pay for college. That same job that the last generation used to manage school won't even cover the books anymore.

Those parents who could work a job and still make it to little league are now working two jobs to keep up with rising rent and stagnant wages to the point where there is no time for parenting in between paying the bills too. This hurts the society as the further social mobility has gotten over time

Blue collar folk don't like white collar jobs. Some even distrust higher level education for whatever reason.

Junior colleges are actually dirt cheap or even free in some places. Online education and legit curriculum are out there for people with time and persistent motivation. These people have completely written themselves off from those opportunities either from their earlier ****ups or their own limitations

Should our society settle for the lowest common denominator or aspire to higher standards the world is demanding in a much larger marketplace?

theres a difference between critiquing the direction of higher education. The inflation level of their cost has made it less accessible and more crippling then ever. What does that move people? into wall street and the big company jobs, pharmaceutical companies so on which is totally ok to criticize. Its not anti science to say the agenda especially of these privately owned pharm companies are their bottom line and has been. No doubt that we the public donated heavy loads of publicly funded research and ip to the pharmaceuticals to bring to market and now they're againt sharing that publicly sourced, privately profited information that affects everyone in the case with covid.

I don't mind people questioning things, and looking at agendas and incentives. History has shown some messed up things, and thats what I would hope education provides, critical objective thinking, not just a feeder into some of the institutions that haven't handeld our resources so responsibly and get away with a slap in the wrist and a finger pointed elsewhere.

I agree that tech is finding more sources. There was a lot of of for profit colleges that people came in with a sincere approach to better themselves and were given a cookie cutter dose of heavy depth without the same opportunities a degree provides.

But its a good thing to promote the access of those and create pathways to find those opportunities. There is never a blanket solution,

No one expects to goto wall street with an associates degree in CC, but that doesn't mean Associates Degrees are worthless. An above average GPA opens much more doors than a HS diploma, such as internships, scholarships or even admission to a tier 1 uni.

Some people just don't want to suck it up and work through it. They think if they mess up with a lower GPA, those 2 years are wasted, so they don't even try.

None of this talks about a person's prior history or current situation.

As long as they don't already have children, prison time or a drug addiction, they could still get it under 25. Maybe that 2 yr turns into 4 yrs because of jobs and paying for rent.

"Gatekeepers" don't care if the circumstances are legit.
