This idiot just doesn't get it, he always wants to stand in the way of the Dems actually getting things done, at least the GOP knows how to stand together for the good of the party, this joker needs to get on board
Supreme party unity is usually not good for any party or system of gov,and amanchin is not the only Democrat against this. It's funny how we pick and choose what we think the GOP does right.
What I have always thought is that Manchin is basically cover for all the Democrats in vulnerable states that want to hide behind him since he's in a ruby red state, and it really doesn't matter how unpopular he is with Democrats. It's really a shame too. In the end, it's about politicians in DC NOT wanting to vote on anything. It just begs the questions of why the hell do you even want to be in government? The ACA vote was seen as the main reason why the Democrats got clobbered in 2010, and it might very well have been. However the ACA was a big reason why the Democrats won back the House in 2018, and potentially saved Democracy by not allowing Trump to entrench himself in all avenues of our government with 2 more years of complete control. Which brings back the question about DC statehood. Is this an issue that could cost Dems an election in the short run, but be popular enough in the long run to re-gain the goodwill of the majority of Americans in the longrun? To me, that's why a major voting rights bill should be the primary ask of Democratic leadership to these Democrats in purple and red districts. Democracy and the right to vote IMO is a winner. Maybe I'm wrong and Fascism has taken root enough to make Democracy a lost cause, but I'm still holding out hope that it is popular enough to galvanize a majority consensus long-term with both the left AND the right (normal voters). .... But yeah on Supreme Party unity... just look at what the MAGA GOP is trying to do to Liz Cheney. It's about a Democracy within a Democracy which is a good and healthy thing. However in this case (Manchin) I think it's mostly about the politics and elections instead of people really having that much of a difference in values. All Democrats and most Republican voters believe that Taxation without Representation is typically frowned upon in a Democratic Republic. If the Debate was really about Taxation without Representation, we'd be talking about Puerto Rico right now probably instead of DC.
Good points. I think D.C. statehood should far down the list of important things and people wanting it just to get more Dems in congress is just a naked power grab like republicans. I am more for swaying people with ideas and deeds like what ended up happening with the ACA and I think Democrats are in a position to build on that with Biden and not try and trick the system like Republicans with stacking the court and statehood. I am not saying I am against any of those things but I don't like how it looks like a naked power grab.
I haven't seen polling on this but I don't think DC statehood is such a big issue. Certainly Republicans don't like it but chances are any one that won't vote Democrat because of DC Statehood probably won't vote Democrat anyway. I agree it's being pushed as power grab to overcome GOP advantage in small rural states. Even so this is one of those issues while motives might not be pure I think the result (getting the citizens of DC representation) is right.
I think it's more about feeding the GOP propaganda lines in their marketing, but the damage might already be done by the House passing it even though it's going nowhere. Sort of like how the GOP ran with "They want to Defund the Police" even though only 2 Democrats at the most ever even argued the point, and most flat out rejected it the way Biden did. The GOP propaganda machine would love nothing more than to turn the Democratic messaging about Republicans being anti-Democracy on its head. The GOP ads wouldn't be about DC Statehood as a policy argument. It would be: "Liberal Extremists are trying to pass laws to Destroy our Democracy by adding LIBERAL SOCIALIST STATES run by BLACK LIVE MATTER!!!!!" Emphasis on the Black people in DC having their own state. That will work with their racist base for sure. The ads are probably already being written, but at least some of these vulnerable Senators can say they opposed the bill that would have made that law.
So predictable Manchin loves the attention as he is the new Collins or Markowski. He can't lose. He has his seat for another 6 years and if would lose reelection he is cementing his ability to get paid in the major league of lobbyists.

They should have a vote - the people in DC can vote in whatever state races they are in already, but the Puerto Rica's are US Citizens without a right to vote....which is against their rights. DD
I know that DD just basically did a massive self own here but the truth is a crap ton of DC residents are transient. I wonder how many would actually register in DC and actually vote in, say, a mid term. I think it would be really few. Most folks keep their home state registrations and just vote absentee.
Ah, so the city is not actually in ANY state, well F-me, that is news to me..... Make em a state then, ASAP....and Puerto Rico. Or you could put DC in West Virginia. DD
the only reason to be against DC/Puerto Rico statehood is if you are a Republican and don't want them voting.
To be fair, you could also be the kind of moron who thinks states are like silverware, and that there should be even set based on a round number like 50.
Superfluous Virginia, founded to address a problem that was irrelevant two years later, doesn't want a disproportionately black neighbor or an hispanic one with 100,000 military personnel, to have the same benefit. Also, Joe Manchin, who was never been seen in the same place as Joe Theismann, is some kind of long con payback for his drafting coach's kid slurring himself out of a lifelong senate seat.
