Can anybody tell me what to look for.

    specific breeds

    puppy vs older dog

    cost vs rescue.

I have always really liked these dogs and want to get one over the summer, what is best way to go about getting one, don't need pure bred or an expensive dog.

    I want a smaller boxer.

Didn’t his boxer vomit in his wife’s mouth? I also recall that it literally sits on a pedestal.

My wife had a boxer when she was my girlfriend so i spent a good 10 years with that dog.
A good friend had a female one.
I like them but they are an undertaking compared to some dogs. High energy.

So... they are very very hyper
    They are fairly smart
    They can be annoying
The males can be tough a mans man aggressive type of dog
    They are quite loving
    Protective of my wife (male)
They can jump high over fences even
    They will get skittish
    They can be pretty strong
Decent watchdog definitely strike some fear
I would say a female is more docile less wild more loving

I could help you, but all lies and jests, a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest.

Our boxer passed last summer. She was a little over 8 years old. Was the runt of her breeding group. Glad we went smaller because at around 50 pounds, she was still a handful. Had her as a puppy and made my wife and I swear off ever getting a puppy ever again. Super high maintenance...super energetic. Loved to jump on people when she first met them...worked really hard to get her to stop. I would strongly urge to get your boxer trained from the get-go...will pay dividends later down the road.

    A few things I learned...
    - boxers needs tons of attention and physical exertion; energy like you wouldn't imagine;
    - Dueces like you wouldn't imagine; gigantic landmines
    - if getting a puppy (or actually any aged boxer), get as close to a purebred as you can; crossbreeds have histories of medical issues
    - boxers have shorter lifespans; eight years is probably the average

    Good luck! You'll need lots.

I love boxers and had them growing up but they are prone to relatively short lives usually from cancer. Amazing personalities but man it’s rough when they go.

After reading this I think I a Boxer might not be for me, need something a little more low maintenance about the same size.

    How about smaller bulldogs?

think about a labrador, that's the low maintenance choice. not small, but doesn't have to be a big dog

The city pound has like 1,000,000 Staffordshire Bull Terriers if you roll that way.

From what i can tell they are super sweet and loyal dogs if they havent been abused. And they have those big, meaty goofy faces that are always entertaining.

I thought Labs where high maintenance?

I like short haired dogs better.

    I like stocky dogs.

labs are calmer and easier to train. they're smart dogs, versus a boxer which isn't a breed normally associated with trainability. I think the key is that it sounds like you're looking for a breed that's a little mellower than a boxer. I'm sure other folks will chime in again as you narrow your search

@jiggyfly ...one thing to consider...and a big reason why we chose to go with a boxer is that they are fantastic with kids. If you have kids or are planning on having kids, maybe a boxer wouldn't be that bad of a choice. Just set your rules early and make sure the dog knows the rules and your expectations. Boxers are trainable...you'll just need to work with them to get them there.

I just like the look of a boxer,I think I am drawn to terriers so will do some research on those, not opposed to a mut.
