This only seems to happen while I am running Internet Explorer. I am not doing anything else other than surfing the internet. I have run everything to clean up for spywear (ad-aware and spy cop), i have zone alarm running, i have a virus protection program running and i have checked my system earlier today. i have also run a memory tester (simm tester). i have updated my video drivers and i really don't know what else i can update or do. any suggestions?
Sometimes it reports no worm when there is one. Run the Windows Update patch. I work at a college and a student KNOWINGLY brought a laptop infected with the sasser worm in and plugged it into my network. There just aren't enough s in the world to express how pi$$ed I was.
the security update patch? i installed the update and i guess we will see if it reboots again...my comp is just f'ed up in the first place...too many problems anyhow...did yall catch the guy?
Didn't have to. He told a teacher what happened and was sent to the IT department, where he claimed that there was no way that his laptop could have spread the worm. I am lucky that I wasn't in my office or I would have said a couple of things that would have precluded me from coming in to work this week.
I have a problem as well, my computer, when I boot, always reports that there was an error in LSASS.exe and when I send the error report Microsoft says that I may have the Sasser worm but I can never update the patch because my computer always gets this pop up window counting down 60 seconds and then my computer shuts down. How do you get rid of this damn thing!!!???
You'll have to do what I had to do...download the patch from another non-infected computer and burn it to a CD so you can run it on your computer.
So downloading and installing the patch automatically rids the computer of Sasser? I mean, you don't have to do anything else before or after installation of the patch? Can you give me the website address to the patch as well?
Yes, the removal tool automatically removes the worm and the patch fixes the problem. I have several copies of the patch and the removal tool on CD if you would like to pick them up.
Sorry, I won't be in Houston until Thursday and I want to get my computer fixed before I leave for there. Thanks anyway though.
Okay, I'm sorry people, but I have to say this (with anger) DO YOU PEOPLE LIVE IN A FRIGGIN' CAVE OR SOMETHING?!?!? In case you haven't read or seen ANYTHING about computers in the past 5 years, I will spell this out for you for the bazillionth time... Anti-virus alone doesn't cut it any more In order to keep your computer safe and secure, you must Purchase and use a firewall Download and install MS security patches weekly Download anti-virus updates weekly Install and use an anti-spyware progam weekly Install and use an anti-adware program weekly There have been countless threads posted here from people whose problems could be solved or prevented by following the five simple steps listed above, and I'm fed up with repeating this information to people! AAAGGGGH! And here, for the umteenth time, is the list of products you can use: a linksys or d-link hardware firewall, or Zone Alarm software firewall. Do not use the firewall that's built into Windows XP go to download.com. Search for, download and install a free program called HFNETCHK. Run it. It'll tell you what MS security patches your system needs Use Norton Anti-Virus or MacAfee. Download and install virus definition updates from them at least once a week. Go to download.com. Search for, download, and install a free program called SpyBot Search and Destroy. Scan your machine at least once a week for spyware. Go to download.com. Search for, download, and install a free program called AdAware. Scan your machine at least once a week for adware. [/list=1]Now, let's see how many hours will go by before another clueless person creates another thread about their computer being infected. My guess is, it'll be about another hour an a half. -- droxford
Well drox I use those steps and do them routinely but I didn't have trouble until I did a System Restore. Once I did a System Restore everything went wrong.
Lil Pun, If you had a firewall, you would never have been infected at all, period. But I'm not just here to chew people out - I do want to be constructive as well.... Try this Unplug your network cable in Windows, before it reboots, click [start] > [Run][/v].. type cmd, and then click OK At the command prompt, type shutdown.exe -a and hit enter. That'll stop the shutdown sequence. then, you can temporarily remove the vulnerability that allows the worm to infect your computer by creating a log file. Do this: At the command prompt, type: echo dcpromo >%systemroot%\debug\dcpromo.log and then press ENTER. Then make the log file read-only. From the command prompt, type attrib +R %systemroot%\debug\dcpromo.log -- droxford
Microsoft's Sasser worm removal tool is here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...7E-1B6B-4FC3-90D4-9FA42D14CC17&displaylang=en Their help and instructions for the worm are here: http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/sasser_printxp.asp -- droxford
