Riiight. SO songs sung at minstrel shows aren't racist while the show itself can be considered racist which includes said songs being presented, sung and performed by white people in blackface...which last I heard is in and of itself racist.

The lyrics were changed for minstrel shows just like eyes of texas aren't original lyrics

The song is I've been working on the railroad

Is I've been working on the railroad racist?

Thank you. My googling showed the lyrics were changed completely to a minstrel song, not the Railroad lyrics being minstrel. The UT students were protesting a racist version of a song more like the Eyes of Texas

As someone who argues that we as blacks need to get past racism, I'm never surprised at something like this. Black and white was this country's biggest issue politically, culturally etc and that's something racists tend to deny.

That being said I doubt UT sang their version in a minstrel manner

The Railroad song is not racist but the song it was copied from - the Levee song - was a staple of minstrel shows. The so-called "report" (which was the idea of wealthy UT donors) makes the point that Eyes only copied the melody of the Railroad song so that makes it OK. The truth is that it wasn't just the melody that was copied but the lyrics as well because the Railroad song is actually the Levee Song from 1894:

Now I'm more inclined to believe Mr. Martinez's account based on what I know about Texas' participation in the Civil War where Texas was where the other Confederate States sent their slaves during the latter days of the war in order to keep them from being liberated by Union solders. In fact, it was during one such movement to Texas that my ancestor was able to escape.

See two posts prior to yours. I did google but was already corrected. That being said whatever the original intent was nobody cares and didn't cared about the minstrel aspect when eyes of texas was written

Okay maybe I'm wrong about the original eyes of texas writer former ut president william prather

That being said there is no need to delete the current version. I will say this I'm more sympathetic if as a black it bothers you

I went to ut, they have little tradition compared to a&m and other schools. I liked singing it and would like to continue
