Gone with the Wind is too popular for it to ever go away. Its like beautiful girl with a bad attitude.

    Ok,

I watched it yesterday with my boys.

I can see where some people might take offense at the stereotypical way that the workers (african americans) are portrayed.

And the cartoons characters also display the dialect associated with this depiction as well.

The stories are harmless, and Uncle Remus is fantastically acted.

But, it certainly has some slavery overtones, and that is clear by the way Remus is treated, and overts his eyes during a discussion with the owner of the plantation.

I think adults can understand it a little better as they have context, but kids will only watch for the cartoons and stories.

On that level it really succeeds, but I completely understand why Disney will not release it again.

The depiction of the slaves, without the context for understanding makes it a bit awkward...but that is through the eyes of an adult.

My boys? Well, they loved the music and thought the story was cool.

Anyway, it is part of my collection and I hope it never gets released so my DVD gets more valuable.

    :)

They technically aren't slaves in the movie, though. The movie is set after the Civil War.

It seems to me that might make it even worse. If it shows that they aren't slaves but still depicts them as subserviant.

I think if they release it, they should definitely put in some historical information to keep the context clear, and foster learning about the topic, etc.

I've heard some criticisms elsewhere that echo your statement.

The funny thing is that people act subservient in every job in the world.

I see if the reason is because you are wroking for someone that's one reason. If the reason is because one race is supposedly subservient to another then that's where the problems arise.

    Blade,

    Yeah, I get that too.

I guess it depends on how you look at it.

You could view it as a race thing, or an employee/employer thing.

However, it certainly looks like a slavery movie, but I am sure that life in the late 1800s on plantations was relatively similar to life during slavery.

Thus the parallels could be drawn.
