Report: Carlos Correa, Astros avoid arbitration with one-year, $11.7M deal https://www.yardbarker.com/mlb/arti...030175?utm_medium=feed&utm_source=sportspyder
Seriously, there is no way he's giving a discount. Part of the reason he's good is he believes he can be the best player in the league. Let him prove it and the money will be crazy because he really does have the attributes to be the best player in the world.
It's going to be bigger than Springer. If he gets through this season healthy with a batting average near 300 with his normal power, his offers will be closer to Harper range.
Agreed. Many Houston fans don't see it but if we don't pony up an offer... be prepared for something crazy like Correa moving to 3B and playing for the Yankees. Money talks and if Correa actually plays 150+ games, he will be probably win the AL SS, maybe win a GG, and be in consideration for MVP given the teams record. If Lindor gets 250 million, we need to show Carlos the brinks truck. Beat his deal by 5-10 million and offset some of that salary with a signing bonus. The guy helped bring a WS to the city and loves it. Not bringing him back and letting him join a powerhouse while in his prime... is detrimental to the Astros WS aspirations IMO if he joins a contender.
Offer him 4 years 100 million. He gets 25 million a year and is still in his prime for his next contract, and the Astros aren't tied to him for too long on the off chance he gets injured.
Should the two parties not find a solution, it would be really weird going through the whole season knowing Correa was leaving.
None of those players, to my knowledge, issued an ultimatum. Granted, most thought those players would leave as those seasons played out. But that is different than them saying so in a definite fashion before the season began.
I understand we couldn’t keep everyone but Cole and Springer weren’t likely returning and Correa wants to be here. With JV and Grienke soon off the books Correa needs to be locked up long term.
The more I think about it. Kind of mad the Astros didn't offer 8 years, 200 million. If he takes it, it could've been a discount off what Lindor gets. 120 million was really low and I can see why Correa is upset. Now, if this is irreparable, who would be for trading him? I for sure wouldn't want to trade him to an AL contending team but I wouldn't mind trading him to the NL and picking up some top prospects. Could it be a big haul? Maybe. I was just thinking of scenarios for how the Astros could navigate this. Trading him means we could allocate that money to an ACE, maybe a legit closer, stop-gap defensive minded SS, and maybe bring back Verlander and/or Greinke. Thoughts?
Only way they trade him at this point is if the season becomes a disaster by the deadline. Possible, but unlikely. Crane spent the money this offseason to contend. They aren't dumping him now. Correa has a big ego. He's going to gamble on himself because he is so talented. It's probably hard to accept that you thought you were going to be a 400 million dollar guy and you get offered a little more than 1/4 of that amount because you can't stay healthy. I hope it works out for him. HOWEVER, if that back goes out again he's going to wish he took that 120 million. Having to take the qualifying offer will sting like hell when everybody knows what you turned down.
I think a long-term deal at 25m a season would get it done but only if it had a player opt out option pretty early on, say after year 2. This gives Correa a chance to show he can stay healthy and truly live up to being superstar. Then renegotiate for a 30+ annual salary.
The Astros will not pay his ask. They are on the cusp of a rebuild and mr massage doesn’t fit it at 30 plus per year. I wonder if he and DW4 have texted about massage therapist since Carlos seems to know some of the more rough ones?
