You're ignoring my point. The Sixers got rid of everyone and the rockets aren't. They can draft their Embiid or Simmons and they would already have the supporting cast around them while the Sixers went scrambling in free agency...

If Porter and Wood are both relatively efficient 20 pt scorers next season and you can get a top 4 pick, it won't be hard to get a guy via trade willing to come here (unlike Aaron Gordon) or sign as a free agent...

Think the Celtics with Tatum, Smart, and Brown... except they blew their wad on Horford and Hayward... something i wouldn't have done...

We're not Minnesota or Charlotte here... we can get guys if we have a couple to start with....

Reaching into his shepherd’s bag and taking out a Stone, he hurled it with his sling and hit the Philistine in the forehead. The Stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face down on the ground.

God wants us on the court.

I think this is the correct take. Passing on Lavert was a screw up but I can also see why they thought that taking a flyer on Oladipo was a stronger strategy since we are only looking for floor raisers or assets to get floor raisers(picks or cap space) and Lavert is probably a decent role player/ceiling raiser at best. At one point Oladipo was an All NBA talent - I think Stone was hoping he could find that guy again but given what we got trading for Oladipo(basically nothing), it kind of blew up in his face. Seems like Lavert would have managed to get more than that back.

The problem was everyone else in the league was evaluating Oladipo while we were and pretty much everyone had moved on but the Heat leaving Houston with little leverage. The only real question is whether Oladipo's expiring was worth more to us than a few extra spots in the draft + whatever is left on Olynyk/Bradley's contracts but maybe Stone is considering their cap hold as expendable salary cap filler if we trade for a star using our picks. I'm assuming Stone's strategy here is either draft a star or trade for one with picks+a collection of nice young guys/salary filler. When stars have been traded, that has typically been the currency....

Looks good but they would also have a max free agent slot... those 5 are roughly 50 million leaving another 60 to spend...

Keep these guys and commit to intensive development for 2 yrs:

Green, Sengun, Matthews, Tate, KJMartin, Christopher, Garuba, KPJ.

Keep taking shots at finding a young franchise player through trade or the draft, and keep acquiring 1st round picks.

    that should be the plan.

Cannot keep all those young players. Any trade will have include a few of them.

Rockets have a shet load of draft picks in next few years.

CF always falls in love with their young players. Remember Beal and Kevin Martin???

Harden trade had half of CF in tears.

    Exactly.

I think KJ Martin may not have a higher value than he does now
Garuba may or may not pan out, but as a rookie who doesn't play he is still a nice sweetener in a trade (ie with a vet to bring back a 1st rd pick - Garuba effectively becomes the pick for a contending team)

Are you talking about 2022 or 2023? Jokic isn't a FA until 23. Brown and Mitchell are under contract and wouldn’t be available in 23. KPJ is up for a rookie extension in 22. I don’t think the Rockets would extend him at this rate. Wood is a free agent in 2023 and his future unclear at this point. Rockets would have to negotiate a new contract for Tate in 23 which could be costly. The ability for this team to attract stars would possibly be dependent on Green’s growth at that time along with the possible lottery pick in this year’s draft and core of players here. I would imagine Stone moves on from Wood and KPJ at this rate barring a spectacular run from them the rest of this year and next. This would free up space for a star perhaps.

I actually think they need more. At least 2 first rounders in each draft for the next 3 seasons. Every year there will be at least two players we’ve Essentially seen enough of to know they aren’t long term pieces and you’ll have two roster spots to get PT.

This season that is definitely Nwaba, and Theis. If you move Gordon at the deadline you have another spot that can get PT to a young kid the next season. Also having two first rounders allows you the option to trade up to get a better player.

More picks please. The Russell Westbrook trade is about to get even more annoying when we start to see those picks go to Sam Presti for really good talent.

The 2023 free agent class is pretty spare. And if we are the same team, but without Wood and Gordon, we won’t be an attractive destination anyway. We can try to draft our way back, but we need to be opportunistic with trades as well.

Trading for a “star” would probably only work if we think a player has the potential to be a major centerpiece. If we are to sign one it would have to be a sleeper/borderline star we think could lead this team for many years to come a la James Harden. Those deals are rare these days. Established stars come by way of other stars already on the team or there was already some elaborate plan in place among multiple players to sign with a team that has a good young core (Nets, Bulls, Clippers) in recent years. It may take 3-5 more years before any Star would sign here or accept a trade. Without a good young core no one would agree to come here. Hopefully the Rockets can replicate what the Suns did in building a young core through the draft while acquiring savvy vets and winning which will open up the team to trade for major stars or big free agent signings.

Attractive destination = ability and willingness to pay. Or the Lakes…

I generally agree, but in a system with a maximum allotment where 5 or 6 teams are making an identical offer, attractiveness does come into play.
