Option 3 is that he plays well, the Astros aren't in the playoff run, and he gets dealt near the trade deadline. Really comes down to how well our pitching is. Lot of wildcards taking the mound this year.
Never say never...but I don’t see a mid-season Correa trade happening. Even aside from how bad our division is, we’re not going to get a haul of any kind for Correa since whatever team trades for him will only have a few months left of team control. Maybe a few fringe prospects but nothing substantial, and I would think Crane and Click would rather keep him here through the end of the season...if we trade him there is, what, 0% chance he signs here?
I don't see why they wouldn't at least go up to $150M. Having $120M be your cap is just insulting to Correa and makes me think they are serious about just starting Pena next season assuming he has a decent year in the minors.
Really unlikely that Correa’s counteroffer was “$120M won’t work, how about $150M?” From appearances, Stros offered $120M and Correa said “wtf?! I’m worth $300M, see ya.”
I doubt that Boras/Correa had no amount that they were asking for. It's just that only the Astros offer was leaked. I don't know how realistic the Correa camp is, but I highly doubt it was as unrealistic as $300m.
You have to think value. A lot of people here think Correa would want 25 million a year. Lets say he would take 8 years at 25 million. So 200 million would get it done. What else could be done with that money? Also, part of why I think the Astros offered 6 years is because that is how long they think he can handle SS. Correa has a career OPS of .833. You know how many 3rd baseman had a higher OPS than that in 2019? TWELVE. You don't want to pay Correa 25 million a year to be the 12th best hitter at 3rd base. Here is just one example of what you could do next offseason if Correa leaves. Maybe Yuli doesn't play well enough for the Astros to pick up his 8 million dollar option. What if instead of signing Correa the Astros go sign Anthony Rizzo (assuming he has a good year) for 5 years 110 million? Then maybe Leon isn't ready to start in CF next year so the Astros sign Starling Marte for 2 years 22 million. So instead of paying Correa and Yuli 33 million you paid Rizzo and Marte 33 million and don't have the 8 year risk that comes with the Correa deal. The Astros would still have potentially another 40-50 million to spend to get to their current payroll after signing Rizzo and Marte. It could be more depending on if Pressly vests his 10 million dollar option. So maybe you sign d'Arnaugh for 3 years 27 million to replace Maldonado. You still have 30-40 million to spend. You could still bring back Greinke or Verlander and add to the pen while having this lineup and rotation..... Altuve 2b Brantley LF Bregman 3B Rizzo 1B Alvarez DH Martes CF Tucker RF d'arnaugh C Pena SS Rotation: Greinke/Verlander Framber McCullers Urquidy Odorizzi That's just one example I came up with looking at guys scheduled to be free agents after this season. There are tons of options with all the available SS plus you could slide Bregman to SS and sign a 3rd baseman. I like Correa, but if it isn't a team friendly deal I don't see the Astros taking that risk and limiting their options for someone with Correa's injury history and likely requirement to change positions in 5-6 years.
We are only left to speculate. It seems like Correa publicly acknowledged Houstons $120M offer and said it was “really low”, so I’m left to assume his asking price was so far from $120M that it wasn’t worth continuing to negotiate.
Correa: "20 million? Ju kidding mayne? What do they think Correa is? A baggage handlgler? We all know that the going rate for a sexy Shortstop is $87,671 a night. Ju know that." I imagine that's how it went.
Hard to fault anyone, really. I get why Carlos feels slighted. Click’s 6/120 offer is objectively fair even if its a tad too low to get it across the goal line...looks like a competent offer based on: 1) injury history, 2) what other top tier SS are making, 3) top end availability next offseason & 4) fact that most competitors have SS solidified. Carlos likewise isn’t crazy to think he’s worth Machado numbers given his outstanding playoff resume. He’s a great player in the most important games. I’m sure he views his injury history as flukey and not representative of how strong/durable he really is. I really hope, at the end of the day, both sides are able to convene in the middle and work something out. We are his best option IMO, and I do think keeping him is our best option as well if we can meet in the 150-200 range, depending on years and options. What would really suck if some big spending club does a curveball move—like trading Gleybar—and inking Carlos to a deal. At the end of the day, if he goes elsewhere for 250+, I’ll understand a la Cole. Click is playing the market which carries its own risk, but it just takes one team to make the offer.
Correa should test the free agent market. He will likely get a better offer from someone like the Yankees, but if not, he could always sign back with Houston if the money was right. If I’m the Astros, I’d let him do it too. I wouldn’t want to be on the hook for a monster contract with his injury concerns. Probably best for everyone for him to see what’s out there.
So he throws Bregman under the bus with the hamstring injuries that will "afffect your whole career" while not recognizing his 2 trips to the IL because of his back injury? Nice.... Especially interesting considering Bregman has played 155 games or more in his 3 full seasons, and in 2 of those seasons Bregman balled out with top 5 and top 2 MVP seasons. Compare that to Correa who played that many games 1 time in the 4 full seasons he was a part of, and has never finished higher than top 17 in MVP. Cool story bro.
The 6/120 was the Astros starting offer. They are not going to make their final offer immediately. He didn’t even comeback with a counter offer.
I'll be sad to see him go but his butt-hurt diva act is really losing my respect. Though... if he put "pay me click" on his cleats i think i'd be back on board.
