Which is exactly why gun control never moves. Its another ignorant circle jerk found with politicians and their constituents. Politicians fully understand banning scary looking weapons will not solve the problem but it gets them a lot of mileage, from both sides. It creates a natural balance by getting all the gun nuts (not the psychos) to buy up all the ammo.

Gun politics in this country can be very irrational on both sides because almost all of it is pandering to base fears such as removal of rights and the fear of being a victim rather than finding genuine solutions. Definitely agree.

That is part of it but I think gun control doesn't move for other reasons than misplaced bans. If that were it we would've already addressed things like background checks.

I have to respectfully disagree. The reality is background checks do very little in the grand scheme of things. Im not saying we shouldn't expand it, but its not going to put a dent in the problem.

The bottom line is that our country has way too many weapons in the hands of our citizens. Im not saying we should revoke it, but lets not put them up in the market on every street corner. And it shouldn't be a wide open free market. Additionally we shouldn't set the bar so low for ownership rights. We shouldn't place restrictions based on citizens vs law enforcement. But as a society, there is nothing wrong with people being forced to prove they know how to own and operate a dangerous weapon.

Background checks certainly aren’t going to solve this issue and they aren’t going to lead to major change. What this is about is making incremental steps to hopefully change the culture. Given that background checks have very large supports in most polls that part of culture has already changed. If we can’t even make that change none of the other changes will happen.

So, if you read a news story without a picture that says something like, "<insert name> is the USA's best hope for a medal in the 100 meters in Tokyo after running a 9.60 in the trials"

Do you picture a black guy or a white guy?

Not sure how many folks are familiar with the way they actually do gun tracing, but reading this article just further reinforces how the laws and NRA restrict everything related to guns. https://www.gq.com/story/inside-federal-bureau-of-way-too-many-guns

Really hard to contemplate how al records are still basically in paper form.

Replace the right wingers on the S. Ct who claim to be "originalists" lol but a few years ago discovered an individual right for every Ahole to have weapons of war. Require several million of insurance coverage for each gun. Quit falling for the culture argument designed to elect folks who won't collect taxes from the 1% and ship the jobs overseas which makes them richer but leads to much of the angst of the types who join militias, attack Congress and fondle their guns. Make the gun industry responsible for all the costs to society of their industry. Treat it more like tobacco and open it up to big damages and recalls for all their previously products that don't have trigger locks. Eventually do an Amendment to abolish the Second Amendment except for well regulated militias. Ban handguns as there is no reason to use them for hunting even for the small percent of the population that hunts.

No one is allowed to do mass killings. Murder is still illegal.

It was an "originalist" who wrote in the Heller decision that there could be restrictions and regulations on the type of fire arms.

I find it too easy for criminals to get guns because there is almost no liability for people who obtain guns legally to give/sell them to people who shouldn't have them.

Here is an example. I can go into academy and buy guns every week. I can then sell those guns as a personal sale to criminals without ever checking ID. If a crime is committed with those guns, nothing happens to me unless they can prove I knowingly sold them to a criminal.

I think we should get rid of the gun show loop hole by making background checks mandatory and free and hold people criminally and civilly negilent for making guns available to people who use them in crimes. Including kids taking their parents guns that aren't locked up like Sandy hook.
