In no way shape or form is he a bad guy. I'm well aware of the charity he has done with his wife. In my mind, Michael Brantley would be the "consummate professional" on this team. That's all.
That is a fair deal for both sides. Credit to McCullers as well, he was serious about remaining an Astro. I expected him to be very difficult to negotiate with. Over the next 6 years he will get 91 million so basically $15,000,000 a year over that span. I would like them to try to get some of these guys signed even earlier like Valdez.
That's a healthy slice of pizza. Granted it doesn't add salary this year, but that's over halfway to George. Astros are betting he's going to be good.
Love the deal. 17 million a year. You wait till offseason and he very well could've been 20-25 million a year.
When you build a quality organization that consistently wins at a high level, players tend to want to stay. Jim Crane has done that.
Fair deal. Toward the higher end of what I would have liked but not a bad deal for the Astros. I wonder if locking up McCullers gives Click more freedom to shop young pitchers for other needs later this year or next offseason. With McCullers, Valdez, and Urquidy locked up for 5 years (and Odorizzi for 2-3), guys like Javier, Abreu, and Brown are easier to trade for a CF or other help.
That and now we can identify another ace to trade for in hopes that we can extend them. I need to look at some young arms with ace upside. We could be able to swing something this year or next to solidify rotation for next 5 years, GTD.
We now have McCullers, Valdez, Urquidy and Javier locked up through at least 2025, plus Odorizzi potentially through 2023. We are in a very enviable position going forward.
That's like 3.5 million for every curve ball he threw to the yanks. Yanks didn't even need their iwatches. Great memories.
$17M a year initially sounds like an overpay but if you look at current pitchers making that amount, you have Nathan Eovaldi who was in a similar situation. High upside but had TJ plus limited to 150 innings or so for the last 6 years. LMJ got market rate and I guess that's pretty fair all things considered.
You can now spend 30 million on an ace next year in the off season, and give Correa a 10/250 (or 12/300 or 13/325 if he needs that) deal and still be under the tax. Before I spent 30 million on an ace though I might check in with JV and see if he'd do a 3/60 extension.
My 85mil Starting Pitcher Lance Mu****** McCullers Jr knows how to notch RBIs in Game 7 of the World Series...LAD and NYY better keep his name out their mouth because their pitchers could never
