Scored my 15 year old a PS5 in November. It's sitting down in the basement, lookin' pretty.

He spends his time upstairs playing the PS4...Nom Nom Galaxy or replaying Horizon Zero Dawn.

PS5...over-hyped and under-ready. DEVELOPERS, PUT MOAR GAMES!

 

IIRC, PS5 wraps all SDR content in a HDR container, or something technical like that. It essentially does "add HDR" to older games, but in a less sophisticated way than auto HDR from what I understand. It still works out well in some cases, less well in other cases (to be fair, I think auto HDR has some misses IIRC?). I think MS lets you turn off auto HDR though, but I don't think you can do that with PS5. If you can, probably not easily. So if you play an old game, and the HDR conversion looks like crap, you're kinda stuck with it.

If you set the PS5 to "performance mode" instead of "resolution mode" for older games, maybe that would lock out the gimmick "hdr"?

 

No, hdr doesn't impact performance or resolution at all, so don't think it would be there.

You'd probably have to do something like force your TV to ignore hdr sources and maybe trick your ps5 into thinking it can't handle hdr. Or something crazy dumb like that.

 

@Yung-T doesn't even have to "trick" his TV, it probably doesn't even have HDR.

 

Doesn't the PS5 make PS4 games look better? Why not play those games, but on the PS5? And sell the PS4, while you're at it?

 

Yea, better framerates, loading times for all games and often specific PS5 patches with additional visual enhancements etc, also HDR conversion for games that never had it.

Either his son doesn't know about it or wants to chill in his own room.

Yep. Been playing Uncharted 2 remaster and it looks amazing.

 

yes you turn / off the Auto HDR option in settings for all backward compatible games.

 

For me HDR does make a difference, because I have LG OLED.
I can't speak for people who have other brands like Insignia or RCA

This might be the most beautiful game I've ever played. Also, it's visceral AF. Can't say enough good things about it.

 

Still basically no PS5s available in Germany, stores are saying possibly tomorrow or next week.

 

I see the tv circle jerk is back. So effing lame, man... STFU already.
