Nobody posted an answer, so I did the research, and will now share it. The deadline to designate protected and unprotected players is June 12.
MAY 26: NBA Draft Lottery JUN 3-6: Pre-draft camp, Chicago JUN 6-20: NBA Finals JUN 12: Deadline to designate protected players JUN 22: Charlotte Expansion Draft JUN 24: NBA Draft JUN 30: Stevie's BYC expires JUL 01: FA negotiations JUL 14: FA signings SEP 30: TE Expires AUG 14-28: Olympic Games OCT 17-19: NBA China Games w/Rockets Today is the lottery! Does anyone know when the summer leagues will be happening? Does anyone know when Eddie Griffin's trial dates are? How about when the players come to camp in the Fall? When would be the earliest that we could have a TMAC/Francis trade? Is that July 1st? I guess it could be announced at any time, just wouldn't be consumated until his BYC expires. Are we not able to use our TE toward next year's payroll until after the NBA Finals?
That doesn't seem right...this means that there will be players knowing that their team was leaving them unprotected in the expansion draft while they're playing for the team that left them unprotected. Then, coming off a triumphant game 7 victory two days ago, you get selected by Charlotte before you can even be in your own parade.
As far as I can tell, the list is not made public. So they only have mixed emotions if they win a ring and there are selected. I don't have a link but here's a quote from the April 16th Washington Times: "Teams are forbidden to make public the names of the players they plan to expose to the draft. However, it is likely the Wizards will place Christian Laettner, who was suspended this season for failing to comply with the league's drug policy, on the unprotected list."
If the playoffs are still going, I think the two teams in the finals get an extra week to make their picks. That happened to Rick MacHorn (I think) of the Pistons a while back. Part of the active rotation. Then about a week later, out. He seemed bitter about it.
Great memory! The Pistons finished a sweep of the Lakers on June 13th. Two days later, Mahorn was the 2nd overall pick of the TWolves. Not sure of the timing, though. June 15th was the technical date for the draft but MINN could have made their selections later.
I would never get argumentative with you on subjects like this but (it sounds like I am about to get argumentative with you on this but I am not) I understood that BYC was dated to the anniversary of the contract's signing, not 30 June. So, SF would not be non-BYC tradable before 26 August (if I even have that date correct). Help me with this please.
quote from: http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#72 "For Larry Bird or Early Bird players, the player's BYC begins on the date he signs his contract. For extended rookie scale contracts, the player's BYC begins on the July 1 preceding the first season of the extension. For example, if an extension of a rookie scale contract is signed on 10/30/99, his BYC begins on 7/1/00, because the first season of the extension is 00-01." What is Steve's?
Francis is on an extension, so 7/1 would be his date. As for players who may be packing for Charlotte the day after winning the championship -- well, isn't it nice to be wanted?
