I know i'm the minority, but why was Stan Van Gundy even mentioned for coach of the year? What did he do? -42-40 record in the EAST -People say he had his team make an amazing comeback after starting 0-9. Isn't his fault they were 0-9? If not, then he can't be praised for their 'comeback' -Riley set all the pieces for him. Basically, he walked into a winning situation. I just don't understand why everyone is hyping him to be that good of a coach
No way does Riley get that team to 42-40. They just went up 3-2 against New Orleans with a terrible team.
I'm talking about the regular season, not playoffs as he was mentioned for COY. Are you saying that SVG is better than Riley?!? Riley never had Odom, Wade, or Haslem. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a fairly decent coach, but I don't think he deserves all the hype he's been getting
well...lets see another coach make odom a solid player. no...i wouldn't consider him for coach of the year - cuz only Sloan and Hubie deserve to be in that fight - maybe Kiki...but not SVG. however, he is a very solid coach who has done a lot with the team and i think he has set up a successful next few years for the team. so...maybe he doesn't deserve ALL of the hype - but he deserves most of it.
Kiki was an exec, not a coach. And I would also argue that Porter deserves some attention. SVG, it's hard to tell. On the one had, there's some talent there, no question, but it's talent which has mostly been disfunctional so far, and it started out like it was going that way. I don;t think too many would have been surprised, before the season or early on, if the Heat were competing for the number 1 pick. On the other hand, they have enough talent on papaer that it's also not exactly a shocker that they pulled out a playoff spot in the East. Hard to read.
SVG has the hype because of the "VG" in his initials. The whole NY butt kissing media thing... just bleeding over to SVG.
Man if the heat moved on, JVG is gonna be one jelous brother at the dinner table. Rember when we beat them early in the season? JVG said something like I feel bad for him, why am I blessed with so much talent and he's not. He aint got no true pg or big man. Now, after this round, the Yao haters are gonna be like we could've gotten odom and another lottery pick for Yao, the Steve Haters are gonna be like man we sure hope we can get a pg like Wade instead of the overpaid Francis
wait, weren't the Heat like at least 10 games below 500 in march? To end up with a winning record and homecourt has to get you SOME credit
where do you start? they were 25-57 last year. also, they didn't go 0-9, they went 0-7, 5-15, 25-36, then finished off the season on a 17-4 run to capture home court on the last night of the season, looking at a Game 7 tonight to possibly go on to play Indiana. I would say Stan had a better year than his brother.
Riley resigned just DAYS before the season began, so SVG had take the reigns w/o so much as a training camp. The talent argument is tough to use, seeing as Odom was the butt of jokes coming to Miami, Grant and Jones were hoplessly shopped for being overpaid role players, Butler was coming off of knee surgery and wasn't effective until the end of the season, and Wade was a rookie. Besides, the coaches shape the talent. SVG opened up the offense (something Riley never would do) while maintaining the defense and vastley improved the team's preformance. Evan
Tell me one coach who deserve COY more than SVG in the eastern conference, and east has to have at least one candidate.
His comments after the win were great...He was a little PO'd and I think he has a better personality than JVG...
I wouldn't completely overlook Porter either. Several of the moves they made had people claiming they were trying to push for the Number 1 pick this year...
SVG deserved to be considered because he did not have all the starter healthy until close to the end of season. He turned the team around to a playoff bound team and earned 4th seed in eastern conference.
