I've recently bought me a throwback Oilers hat and will probably embrace THAT aspect of Pro Houston football for a while until the Texans can become relevant again and I'm not embarrassed by every move they make. Oilers broke my heart multiple times, but at least they made it to big games and didnt have a charlatan preacher in charge of football operations.
Most industries are over-utilizing nostalgia now. The end product seems to be about the same as well. A lot of hype... some warm memories conjured up... but in the end, nothing meaningful is re-created, nothing lives up to the original. The city obviously cares about the Texans... because Houston is just too much of a rabid NFL town not to... they obviously are pissed off about the current direction. Some will become apathetic, and those are the true lost fans. Others will still follow, albeit more distantly, but be ready to jump right back on if the team starts to put together some solid results. The Oilers capturing this cities in the late 70’s was a lot of factors coming together at the right time. It wouldn’t take much for the Texans to make a similar connection, but they keep falling over themselves... whether its selecting the wrong coach, the wrong QB, playing it too safe in terms of character, or back-firing on some low-character guys. The Oilers also never had the city galvanized as much as they did in the late 70’s. The Moon era was a lot of fun... but there was just too much disappointment and eventual embarrassment. The closest the Texans got to owning this city was the T.J. Yates fill-in-for Schaub year... but in the end, they didn’t really accomplish much.
It's unquestionably time for a rebrand. It won't happen and I don't care anymore (I won't be following the team when they get rid of Deshaun), but its quite an opportunity to ditch the shitty identity of the "Texans" Name has always been terrible, worst name in football and its not close, its something every other team makes fun of and rightly so. Jerseys and colors are among the most boring in the league, get rid of em. The only thing they did right was the helmet logo, but getting rid of it for a complete rebrand is worth it.
A rebrand would be great, but let's not let the ineptitude of the front office run into this topic. We don't have the worst name in the NFL. Like cmon dude....there's a team in Cleveland that was so original, they're named a color. And wear Orange and Brown. Not to mention the Redskins even the Chargers name is kinda lame. We as fans want a rebrand just to see some infusion of change, and excitement, but you don't rebrand at the start of a rebuild...Lol. In 2-3 years, when things are getting turned around, they'll come back with a slight Uniform adjustment, or color change or something, and that will be the rebrand....Lol
If the Rockets can go back retro and Texans rebrand to the Oilers it will give the fans something to look forward to after these horrible last few months
The 'Texans' is the worst name in the NFL plus it's the Cowboys original name -- they could get the Oiler name back if they really wanted to fight for it, but that doesn't seem likely.
Again, the novelty would be great... but unless the team starts to perform, it will soon wear away. The Astros had great timing for their rebrand, for what became the greatest era in their franchise history.
Do you really think they’re named after a color, or just joking? They’re actually named after their founder, Paul Brown (who also went on to help found the Bengals). But the Browns are a good example of how novelty, nostalgia or tradition doesn’t necessarily mean as much unless the team wins. Most Cleveland fans acknowledge that this Browns team is not the original one... that one plays in Baltimore and has two super bowl wins.
My statement of being "named after a color" was in sheer response to the claim that we have the worst nickname in the NFL. Regardless of the reason, the "Browns" is a worse name than the Texans....
Roughneck games were so much fun. Watching the old run and shoot. PJ Walker killing it. Yep "the good old days"
