Is it though? I have a bad back because of it, I have to get my clothes at a different store. I am limited in the car I can drive. If I get fat, it hurts like hell.

Likely means Valdez injury is gunna cost him majority of the year. I fear there is some ligament damage. Odorizzi will provide solid innings and help stabilize the rotation.

Love it. At the worst he’s an innings eater that can help save the bullpen. At the best he’s an innings eater with an ERA in the upper 3’s who helps save the bullpen.

Just went and watched some of his highlights from 2019. Man, he was really solid. Fastball was up to 95 after his first couple starts with some good secondary pitches. Was consistently going 6 innings or more. Could be a really big signing for us if he can get back to that form.

He’s thrown 140+ innings every season from 2014-2019. ERA sub-4.0 in three of those seasons. Only one season higher than a 4.10 ERA.

If we could get something like 140 innings and a 3.9 ERA out of him that would be a huge win. Also stabilizes our rotation some for next season with LMJ, JV and Greinke all pending FA’s. For sure we have Valdez, Odorizzi, Javier and Urquidy as starters next season. Worst case scenario, if we fail to sign all of Correa, JV, LMJ and Greinke then we will have a lot of room to add SP as well.

Our rotation is now Greinke, LMJ, Odorizzi, Javier and Urquidy. That’s pretty solid. And now you’ve got Garcia, Abreu, maaaaaybe Whitley, etc. as some depth.

Excited to see what Strom can do with Odorizzi. Hopefully he can pitch like a high end SP2, although seems more likely to be a solid SP3. I’m assuming this means we can’t make a move at the deadline (for luxury tax reasons) unless we trade salary?

edit: forgot Odorizzi spent several years in TB. Wonder how much of that familiarity (if any) factored into the signing

Hopefully Valdez isn't out for the season and Strom gets Odorizzi back on track.
    Grienke
    McCullers
    Valdez
    Odorizzi
    Urquidy
*Verlander although unlikely. He did say he was hoping to come back near the end of the season. But he could have just been saying that and everyone said highly unlikely he recovers that soon.

Not bad of a rotation. Also good to have him next year as well since they could lose Verlander, Grienke, and McCullers.

I know the Astros didn't want to go over the luxury tax line but it means they most likely will right? Even if Odorizzi signed for less, any in season trade will most likely have them go over right?

Depends. If this contract puts us over then going over a little more at the deadline doesn't matter much. It wasn't about the money for the Astros. It has to do with the potential draft pick and international signing money losses. So if Correa doesn't stay and we give him a qualifying offer we only get a pick after the 4th round like we did with Springer. Had we stayed under the tax the pick would be after the 2nd round.

Then if we wanted to sign a player that has a qualifying offer attached it would cost us our 2nd and 5th highest picks plus 1 million in international signing money. Had we stayed under the tax, the penalty for signing a player with a qualifying offer attached would have been the 2nd pick and 500k in international signing money.

So it's all but official Framber is gonna miss most of the season at the least.

Pretty much a need signing, but they wouldn't have done it if the nerd cave didn't like their projections. We're losing a lot of innings next offseason as well, so this helps address that on top of the need for 21. He had an excellent season in 2019, could be an absolute steal of a signing if he can replicate that.

This allows us to work our prospects in softly. Hopefully Whitley or Martes found the fountain of maturity.

If the player option has a buyout as big as the option (like Liam Hendricks did) then it should reduce the AAV by a third.

Wonder what the 40 man roster move will be?

Framber to the 60 day IL?
